Sure, the US spends billions each year keeping up monuments and institutions that are a source of pride and patriotistm but don't do much else. Upkeep of the monarchy is similar, except it also provides leaders with a long-term view of the commonwealth and a slight ability to direct its direction.
IMO I think the US would benefit from a low-power but long-term leadership. Politicians with 2,4,6 yr terms focus too much on politics and not enough on our long-term good.
