I played golf since I was young, in part of HS, and I still play for fun, just not as much as I'd like. Your friend is right... if you are a strong player, you'll want metal shafts. I've snapped or cracked 3 graphite shafts before I moved to metal shafted clubs. Most people under 35-40 will swing plenty hard to warrant getting a nice set of metal shaft clubs. Also, I have graphite drivers which are pretty much no good now because I swing too hard for the flex. I'll need to get some xxs or metal shafts in the future.
Well, the set I have right now isn't the best, but its a nice, custom fit (very important) set of King Cobra II's. I'd either go with something like that, or a set of Titleists in the same price range, which is about $600 for the basic irons I think.
