I'm not sure why it works, but it does. You learn things when you make a ghetto-fab sound system. I would imagine the caulk bonds well to the wood, and is made with some sort compound that seals well.
I suppose if you have a well made box to begin with (all measured nicely with smooth edges) then the difference of caulk would be negligible. I had a crap-box 12"that I paid 40 for.
