i have a mono sub amp on two subs and it pounds my daylights out. of course i have very efficient subs so i can get away with it. 93 instead of most kickers are about 88-89. which doesnt mean mine are better they just use power better.

400W rms is alot of power. you don't hafta look quite that high to get good sound out of either xpl's or compvrs. but you should get at least 250W. the rms rating on each of those speakers is xpl-500W compvr- about 400 (i think, dont remember)
so you really don't need to push the limits.
as long as you get at least half the rms number you will get good sound. power is expensive.

if any professionals are reading this forget what i said. what i said is for people who don't have a lot of cash. like me!

Are you nuts?? j/k

For certain subs I can agree that you should stay away from the rated peak rms (ex: Pioneer, Kenwood, Sony XPLOD, ect).

But others will suffocate at half the recommended wattage (ex: Orion, Kicker, DD, ect).

And the efficiency rating is a very poor way to judge an audio component..

In this industry there are no set guidlines as to how a manufacturer is supposed to test his products. Its common to have a sub that has 93db sin and one that has 86 db, and somehow the 86db sub is louder.
The main reason for this, is the fact that companies chose their own frequency to test. One did 93db at 90hz and the other did 86db at 35hz.. And the 93db did only 75db at 35hz (& and was about shredding), whereas the 86db sub did 115db at 90hz.
Do you get what I'm saying?

On top of that their is the environment it performs in.. We wont even go there.

Ah hell, let me throw one more thing at you .

If you want to calculate the efficiency of a sub..
For a percentage (%) :
no = K(fs^3Vas)/Qes
in which K= 9.94(10)^-10 for Vas in liters

For SPL :
1W/1M dB = 112 + 10log(base 10) * no

------------------------------------------------------------
Bottom line if you want good subs but wont be able to power them properly, chose another sub.
