There is a utility on apple.com that lets you reset your ipod and upgrade the firmware. Worked for me when my shuffle started acting up on May.
No problems now.
BTW you dont need a screen. When you consider the amount of time the item is used and the amount of time you actually look for a song via the screen its a small percentage. For the price/memory size you just skip to the next song.
