Man...from the beginning iPods have been plagued with battery problems. After a year or two the batteries usually just stop working...period. And I don't know about the newer models, but the old ones had internal batteries that couldn't be changed, so you basically had to pitch your $300 piece of junk. We started selling MP3 players at work a little while before X-mas (we sell iPods and another player from Creative) and I'm ALWAYS steering people away from iPods. They're more expensive, have shitty, glitchy software, and they're nowhere near worth what they cost (I'm not a huge fan of Creative's software in general...in fact I downright loathe it. But ANYTHING is better than Apple's software). If you can live without being hip and cool and having the "iPod" name, just get a generic MP3 player. Chances are it'll work better and probably cost about 1/2 of what the iPod does.
