Well "is" is more of an existential thing. It's a transitional word between "was" and "will be" It's kind of like the word "word". It takes longer to explain than you'd think. "What does "word" mean? Well...it means a word". Duh. 
And as for "the"...it'd take a lot of restructuring the english language to get rid of "the". Not even going into that it can sound two different ways depending on the word that follows it, replacing the word with "it" would be virtually impossible. Can you imagine trying to preface a noun with "it"? "Be right back...I'm going to it store". Or "Get me it paper". Just doesn't work.
