Check consumer guides. Check Carfax. Read message boards. Find out what the trouble spots are and besure to check the car over. Having a mechanic check the car over is always a decent idea.
The nice part about used cars is the fact that you can usually get the dealer to work on the price. Just make sure you know what you are getting (how much the car is worth, etc.) Then start the haggling. If you do not have a trade-in it is easier to get them to come off the price. If you DO have a trade-in you will probably want to focus more on the price of the trade-in then the car itself. Chances are the more they knock off the car then less of a trade-in your going to get.
Read the classifieds and the local dealer guides. Around here we have Automart and AutoExtra that are a lot more dealer focused then Autotrader is. Those maybe good in your area as well. I highly recommend some sort of extended warranty for used cars. Since you never know what your going to get.
When you go to purchase the car, make sure you know what kind of interest rate your getting. Some dealers will get a percentage of the loan if they can sell a higher APR. Do let them get those high interest rates in there!
