explain this (math)

Im probably missing something really obvious, but Ive been doing this crap since about 4, and Im tired....so cut me some slack if it is.

Explain to me how:
(2 +- {Square root}-44) / 6

Becomes:
1 / 3 +- (i {Square root}11) / 3

The 1/3 I get...no brainer. I get complex numbers.
But how in the fuck does root 44 become root 11
