Tranny's pretty easy to get to on a d16... there's really not much in the way... if you have a lift it's easy.
as far as the trans fluid I'd recomend Penzoil's synchromesh fluid.
If that doesn't do it try GM's Synchromesh "friction modified"... there are 2 fluids... most dealers will just give you the normal synchromesh fluid which is identical to the penzoil... you want the friction modified version...
My tranny sounded shot... and that was a LONG time ago... now it's fine.
It may take some time for the grinds to go away... some on H-T say as long as 1000 mi.
