Actually that's not entirely accurate. They could make tons more combinations if they used better tolerances. American auto makers have tolerances in their locks down to tens of thousandths of an inch. Imports are generally a lot less than that which means that if the key is even close it will usually work. And I thought the Japanese were supposed to be all efficient.
