hands down apple has the best MP3 player on the market.
THey have 49% of the market share becuase their product is superior. If yuo want a decent play, spend the extra cash and buy an ipod. Mini disc is old technology and the only reason sony is pushing it is because they haven't launched their less expenses MP3 to combat the ever growing apple share in a market first started with Sony's first 'walk man'.
As for me, I bought one of the early MP3 players for around $450. I was happy with it for about 2 years, now I realize whenever I listen to MP3s i'm by my computer so I'll be using my laptop.
If you're really going to use it, the money isn't an issue. If its a toy, buy something cheap so when you stop using it in 6 months you dont feel bad.
