mIRC is something else. Consider it an alternative to crappy p2p. It used to be a lot better before DALnet went down (now there are no music servers).
As far as waiting for your request, patience is the key. When you request a file, you are put into a waiting queue. Sometimes it takes awhile, so just wait.
