well i kinda agree with you, but sometimes under extreme pressure the human brain does not act in your best interest in split second decisions. Ofcourse it might sound dumb what he did when cold thinking it, but in the heat of the moment it is all different. i can give you one example: almost everyone knows that when a car starts sliding on wet/ice it's not good to slam on the brakes, but in extreme situations almost everyone does slam on the brakes making the outcome worse. I guess it's just a human instinct.
