Basically, there are infinite amounts of data that Stanford needs to collect in order to better figure out how proteins fold. Since Stanford can't just go out and spend millions upon millions of dollars for huge processing facilities, they distribute the work out to people who would like to help a good cause. Your computer downloads the work, processes it, and sends the results back to stanford.
The whole points thing is just for fun and to keep people interested in it.
