just fyi this is not always the case.... most honda engines (Maybe all I'm not sure) are "interferance" motors... which means that IF the valve is all the way open and the piston goes to tdc it will contact the valve...

MANY MANY engines are designed so that if the timing belt goes it just stops running and does NO internal damage...

even better some companies put timing CHAINS on instead of belts... which basically NEVER go.
