FWD sucks if you like to drive. Requires CV joints (a pain, but once automakers figured them out not a big deal), but you can mount the engine sideways and take up less room as compared to RWD.
The driving difference is all about weight shift. RWD => more acceleration traction. FWD => understeer, which is arguably safer than oversteer for the unskilled (typical) driver. Also torque steer, a nasty effect of having nothing common between the motor and drive wheels.
AWD is not what you want for off-roading - you want true 4wd. AWD is nice for cornering or accelerating with traction, though.
