I used a HUB, not a router, and I'm 99% sure my computer didn't have to be on, and it wasn't a host. You split the connection right out of the modem to each computer, so they basically are seeing the same thing.

RR does this make sense to you? I'm not an expert, but I'm pretty good with computers.
