burning oil

Hi, i have a civic LX 97' stock everything on the engine. When I checked my oil only 2,000 miles after changing it i noticed it was a quart low and had a burned smell and look to it. my engine has 140,000 miles on it. Do any of you have any suggestions of what to do?;(

maybe the valve cover gasket has a cut in it, mine got one for no reason at all

idontdriveauto 11-27-2002 01:36 PM

is there any way to tell if it is cut without tearing apart the engine. i was reading the repair manual and it looks a little involved. If I took the thing apart, should I go ahead and rebuild the engine. I am starting to look at ways to improve performance.

ok,.. is there any wet or grimy spots? cause if theres a cut in any gasket, there will be a leak. is there any blue smoke out of the exaust? when you first start it or get on it?

idontdriveauto 11-27-2002 08:07 PM

there are no leaks present and if there is blue smoke, it is only a little

if there is blue smoke you are burning oil. have your engine compression checked. the test kit is around $25-30. is your idle weird ? does your oil smell like unburnt gas ?

idontdriveauto 11-27-2002 09:11 PM

yes, it does smell like the unburned gas, I didn't think anything of it until I checked my oil, i have not had the car for more than 2 months. If it is burning oil, what is the best way to fix it.

it's more likely that your rings are messed up.

idontdriveauto 11-28-2002 08:40 AM

is there a place online where I can look for new rings with pricing. If I replace these, should i get ones with a higher compression ratio than stock? thanx

ebpda9 11-28-2002 10:54 AM

www.summitracing.com aroun 120 for the rings and 500 for the Pistons, pins, rings.

www.hondaautomotiveparts.com $8 a ring $25 a piston.

but my guess is that you need to replace only the rings.

thanks for the help!!!! I found some I will buy.

nonovurbizniz 12-02-2002 07:52 PM

your seriously just gunna tell this guy to rip apart his motor and replace his rings without ANY diagnosis?????

are you serious..

There should at least be a little investigation. suggest cleaning the motor and searching for new oil spots after a week or two.

At least do a compression and leak down test first.

I wouldn't go ripping into the internals just to replace rings on a "hunch" that you got on the internet.
