weight lifting

Alright i've been lifting weights on and off for the last few years. I seem to have built some good strength but nothing to show of it.

Is this possible? I mean can some body types not show muscle mass and still have the strength of someone who looks strong?

Kyle 11-24-2002 10:31 PM

it's not really about body types...
It's how you lift the weights...
body builders lift a lot of weights with low reps...most runners and stuff do low weights with a lot of reps...just to tone your muscles...
I don't know too much about weight lifting...that probably doesn't help any...but whatever...

Accord Man 11-24-2002 10:36 PM

Absolutely.

However for a given amount of muscle tissue there will be a certain max.

Part of it is due to stamina/intensity.

Its also the same for me.
On a flat bench I press 185lbs (I'm 5'9" 165lbs), my buddy who is 5'10" 187lbs also maxes out @ 185 lbs.

Soon I'll adjust the training for mass.

You also have to eight a lot of foods filled with protein!
For example, chicken breast or the white part of the eggs!
That stuff has TONS of it!
Unless you wanna do it the chemical way, with using that mixture that you can add to your drink.
But the natural way is better!

i lift weights on and off too, i built up a TINY bit in my chest, and my abs becamse defined, but my arms wouldnt get bigger at all. i have 2 workout drinks i drink now before and after, a carbohydrate drink before and protein afterwards, i'll let ya know in a month if it did anything

Accord Man 11-24-2002 10:45 PM

If you want, post your workout routine and diet.. I can help you out..

ChrisCantSkate 11-24-2002 11:53 PM

my workout routine and diet change so much. i eat alot of pasta, some meat, pizza, soup, cookies, peanut butter and ritz crackers(my new fav snack) and hamburgers, well thats at least mainly what i eat.

as far as my workout routine, i do about 70-75% of my max 3 sets of 10. i work alost of muscles.. my gym has alot of equipment, so whatever i have to do, i probobly have. i do chest abs shoulders and tri's one day, then legs bi's and abs the next, if im not going daily (2 times a week) i do 2 full workouts

V8killimports 11-24-2002 11:59 PM

If you don't change your work out every month or so, you won't see any gains. You can't do the same ole same ole forever..

ChrisCantSkate 11-25-2002 12:13 AM

ya, i havnt maxxed out recently, but ive been inceaseing my weight 5lbs every 2-3 if i can. some muscles build faster than others for me.

ShEaNy 11-25-2002 12:35 AM

work one part(area) of ur body each day.....its a lenghty process to build ur body like those body builders...some of them spend 12hour days at the gym.....one day..arms...then legs...abs....chest....back...etc.....my buddy who is smaller told me this...hes really tone...6pack pecks..hes got it all..but hes not to strong..i can tune him...im 5'7ish about 187.... i mostly work on arm strenght....i just gota get rid of some minor flab on the biceps....
:pukey  :o those powered drinks are ok.....my cousin takes a eyedropper full of this liquid drink..ill try and find the name..thats all i can think off..P.S. im not a pro neither is my buddy we could be wrong on some things :bandit:

ChrisCantSkate 11-25-2002 12:57 AM

i have a 2 day cycle, abs every day, chest bis and thighs one day, sholders tri's and calves the other

drdingo21 11-25-2002 06:58 AM

when i first entered weightlifting back in highschool i weiged 160 and could hardly get 145 up on the bench. By the time i left weight lifitng after 6 months i was 6'1 weighed 213 and i can bench 295. That was 2 years ago and i have stoped working out so much and now i have droped to 205 but im still defined....

The way we did our workouts is you take your max then divide that by 1/3 and do 10 reps with that weight, then you take 1/2 and do 5 reps with that, and then around 15-20 lbs under your max and do 2 reps with that. It may sound easy, but its not. Then every couple of days raise your max 5-10 lbs but make sure you can bench the extra 5-10 lbs first. Also make sure to streatch! very important yuo don't wanna tear or pull anything

mt.biker 11-25-2002 07:28 AM

this is a typical work out that i can do in about 30mins. There are a few things I do do that aren't listed here but this is the general idea.
As for food I eat alot of everything, you name it i eat it.

curels (per arm)
10lbs- 20reps (warm up)
25lbs- 12-14 reps(until burnout)
35lbs- 8-10reps

lats
60lbs- 20reps (warm up)
120lbs- 12-16 (or until burnout)
140lbs- 8-10

bench press
45lbs- 16reps (warm up)
140lbs- 12-14 reps(or until burn out)
160-170lbs- 6-8reps

legpress or sqat
70lbs- 14-20reps (warm up)
250lbs- 18-25reps (or until burn out)
350lbs+ - 12-14reps

butter fly
20lbs- 16reps (warm up)
30lbs- 12-14reps (or until burn out)
40lbs- 8-10

Those are good to keep you tone and fit, but honestly that isn't really enough weight (depending on how big you are now) and too many reps to but any bulk on.

I think a lot of it is body type..

I have a friend that is about 5'7 and weighs about 150lbs.. He benches 250 and you cant tell at all, I mean he looks really small. He has tried everything and cant bulk up.

Well i'm 6'1 and 170-175lbs I would consider myself light for my height. But until recently that was the point. When I was racing mtb upper but wasn't really an issue, the lighter the better. So i just worked my legs. At one point I could leg press over 500lbs, but those days are gone and now i just want to be strong over all.

So maybe its just a body type thing, like i can bulk up my legs so they look like 2 or 3 times the thickness of the average guy but upperbody wise it just doesn't happen.

hey.. im 6'0 and 145lbs, and dont consider myself tiny. my legs are the same way, i can do 400lb calf extentions, 500+ leg press reps, and still not get too sore. it was from skating ramps fo 6 years.

well i woudl like to be about 190lbs. It was only a month ago i was 160. So i'd say i'm making improvments...

well it depends on what you define quitting. DO i still love to ride my bike, HELL YES! Will I ride a bike until the day i die, HELL YES! Will i bust my ass this winter to improve my riding, no. Two seasons back I stopped racing enough to keep the sponsor i had (local bike shop), then dam school work started catching up to me. So I had to cut back trianning at which point i stopped place in the top ten and it stopped being fun.

So i'm taking a break from the Ontario Cup series and i'm doing 2 24hour races a year.

SofaKingSmooth 11-25-2002 09:56 PM

you lift a lot ot gain bulk then get cut by lifting lots of lighter weights... it is that simple

mt.biker 11-25-2002 09:58 PM

cool thanks dude

AzCivic 11-25-2002 10:02 PM

its not THAT simple. yes, heavy wieght bilds on, light weight defines, eating plays a huge role too, without enough protein(and other stuff im sure) you wont build up cause your muscels have nothing to biuld with.
