Turbo downpipe
 
Ive been thinking of the custom turbo that I want to do but is there a way to just buy a downpipe for my civic? Ive looked everywhere but cant find any at all. All I can think of is custom fabrication...but I dont know where to get that done. I dont think Midas or Minekie does that do they?

um...its for when the turbo is installed...eventually.
all I know is its 2am and im still up on my computer wonding about downpipes and turbos

Depending on what kind of turbo you're going to use you may be able to just buy one. If you're going to go with a T-3 style turbo you can just buy a downpipe from Rev-Hard or Drag or F-Max. If you are going to go with any other style turbo then you will have to get it custom bent which can be done at a Midas or Minekie.

Hey Ditty, it all depends on how you do it. You can't get a specific down pipe unless you have the rest of the setup. Depending on what turbo you have the pipe may need to be different. depending on what exhaust manifold you use, it'll effect the position of the pipe. Also, how you mount the turbo, size of the flange. You have to mount it and then have someone make it, on the spot from scratch. especially if you're going to do a home made.

'cause I dont want to make them used headers. I want them to be new so I can sell the stupid thing. why I bought it I have no idea probably just thought it'd be a good idea at the time

Oh and the dp is gonna be the last thing I get..hell more than likely I'll just get the greddy kit just because im so lazy

pretty much yeah I thought I had a buyer (someone from here actually, I name no names...you know who you are) but they backed out after they told me they wanted it...I packaged it up and everything...now it just sits in the corner. Hopefully I can get the turbo by summer. If not I will have it by next winter because I'll upgrade the internals first and then turbo it (a much smart way to do it :D) Nope no MSN...I am totally against microsoft and only use it as an OS becuase I really dont have a choice...I have AIM though for chat and use comcast as my service provider (cable baby oh yeah)

pics...no...but I figure its brand new so this one from the manufacturer should be ok...retail for it is $310 but if I can get $130 or somewhere around that I'd be real happy

You really dont need to worry about the position of the manifold affecting the pipes postion too much cause if it is a little off at the converter you can just use a flex pipe to help line it up.

I really wouldnt go with a greddy kit. Dont get me wrong, im not saying that they are bad kits cause they are far from bad, its just that for the money you will be able to get more if you put it together yourself. The basic GReddy kit for the SOHC sells for about $1,400 shipped then of course you're going to add the intercooler which usually costs about $750 shipped so you're looking at about $2,150 right there. For about $200-300 more you can build yourself a turbo kit and get yourself a standalone fuel management system.

I was going to go with a GReddy kit myself for my Si but then I realized it's just way too much money for what you get. The kit for my Si is $2350 shipped the large intercooler is $800 shipped then the Hondata system with computer wiring harness and program is $1100 which puts the total up over $4000 ! I really thought about it and decided that I was going to put the kit together myself and I am glad that I did. Right now I have almost everything that I need to install the kit (just waiting for the turbo to comeback from rebuild and need the piping bent). Below is a list of the parts and what I paid for them...

T-25 Turbo - bought it blown and I just sent it out to be rebuilt and upgraded to a T-28, cost me $50 plus they are charging $325 for the upgrade
GReddy - Type S Blow Off Valve $180
HKS B series manifold - bought brand new $300
Mitsubishi Starion intercooler - bought it for $100 and then cost me $75 to modifiy the end tanks
Minekie - is bending all my pipes and making my downpipe cost is $400
Miscellaneous - fittings, oil and water feed lines, gaskets $150
Hondata - complete with ECU ODBII to OBDI harness datalogging $1200
Mitsubishi - 450cc injectors $100
Total - $2,880

I am sure that at the time of the install I might find something else that I may need but as of right now thats the total. Much better than $4,000+ I would spend going with a greddy kit I think.

I think its much better to go this route, not only to save yourself money but for less money you can build yourself a better kit, and its a good learning experience. Going this route forces you to learn how things work which will help when something goes wrong.
