Decided on Turbocharging...

Jennifer, my girlfriend, and I have decided to turbocharge her 99 Camaro Z28. I'm gonna do the whole install and basically custom everything. I'm hoping too keep the price down on all these, probably between 1500 and 2000 dollars for everything. Should be pretty damn fast. I'm gonna see if I can get a turbo from a Grand National and have it rebuilt. Custom turbo manifold with no intercooler. We plan on running 5-7psi with no major engine or fuel upgrades. I'm thinking Tial wastegate, greddy blow off valve, walbro intake fuel pump. Hopefully I won't have to upgrade injecters but ya never know. All and all it should be a **** load of fun to do and only take a weekend to install after I have all parts needed for installation. I will make sure to post tons of pictures of install and have before and after dyno sheets. CANT WAIT FOR THIS ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was thinking about it but that would raise the costs a bit more. I'd need 2 turbos, 2 turbo manifolds, 2 intakes, and i'm not 100% sure on how boost control works with twin turbo having never worked on one. I feel much more confident doing a single turbo.

I'll do any car as long as you buy parts and provide masses amounts of beer while I figure out how it's gonna be done.

How much is masses amount of beer. I'll buy the parts and say 2x24's  (That is when I get a better car worth turboing! )

Grip72 10-17-2002 06:24 PM

LMAO...me next..me next!!!!

toykilla 10-17-2002 07:07 PM

Sure, bring all cars to my house when you guys have all parts inorder to do a custom turbo install and i'll really do it for $500 bucks..and some beer of course...

Niacin 10-17-2002 07:09 PM

Single or twin?

And, not to be disrespectful or anything, but are you sure you know what you're getting into? Even Incon only recommends 4psi for the bone stock LS1 cars, and being a '99, you've only got the 24# injectors for fuel.

Further, there's a arrogant twonk down here in Miami with a turbo 2000 TransAm, and from what I understand, he's had problems since day 1, and is already on his second block.

isn't beer enough ? jfwy

where can i get turbo manifolds ? that's the only thinng holding me back from having a turbo accord.

Even my little 4 cylinder can handle 9psi boost on stock internals and no, its not normally turbo'd. I'm 100% sure a big bad v8 can handle 7psi on stock internals. Second, this will be the 4th car ive turbo'd thats normally not turbo'd. My first v8 but I think I have a very good understanding of what needs to be done to be safe. How much boost is that guy running down there? About the injecters, I don't think 7psi will max the stock injecters but if it does I will upgrade them as well. I don't think it will be that hard other than the turbo manifold. If thinks all go well I might even remake the kit for sale with a brand new turbo of course instead of a rebuilt Grand National turbo.

I saw/heard a turbo'd CRX here yesterday. If I was in my car, I would have chased him down. Always wanted to race a turbo'd Honda.

A machine shop will have to fabricate one for you and from what I heard last. You will need to relocate your battery and something stupid like that. I'm sure I could make it all fit without relocating anything big.

I'm thinking you should swing by the Forced Induction forums on www.LS1tech.com for some light reading.

im gonna agree with him, v8's are built very different than a overhead cam 4cyl. you might wana see what problems other people are having. cause i doubt your the first person to have thought of this, if it can work.

What exactly am I suppose to be reading there? The car can and will do just fine at 7lbs boost. Your turbo'd ws6 friend doesn't know how to tune. You usually have nothing but problems when your not tuned for shit. The only thing I was fearing was not being able to run 7lbs with stock injecters so we ordered some 36lb injecters. Going with the T-60 turbo, greddy bov/wastegate and un intercooled as of right now. I'll let you peoples know how it goes. Should be all done by Christmas!!!

ive also heard that the v8s have a problem with turbo on stock internals...i have a frined with a twin turbo z and its pushin i think 683hp but he upgraded the insides...next time i see him ill ask for a like for pic and stuff...

Niacin 10-19-2002 01:01 AM

Of course, you don't agree with what I'm saying, so I have to be wrong. Do let me know the outcome of the whole project, please.

Let me add, then, that Home Depot is having a sale on the Fuller Co. Upright Synthetic Broom for $13.68 each, so you can get a couple to sweep up the bottom end of the block after you jam 7psi of non-intercooled 290 degree F boost down the throat of a aluminum LS1 motor. Please read up on this before you make a very expensive paperweight out of your ladie's car.

On other topics, my friend in Miami is dyno-tuned rather well. IIRC, the car makes >500lb/ft...when it runs.

But, as you've shown apt to do, feel free to ignore anything on the Internet you don't agree with. We're all wrong.

Rob, You know what i thought about this on AIM. I think her car is gonna be one fast ride! All the power to ya man, and maybe in a year or so i'll be taking you up on the beer/turbo work :)

I know little about turbos so i'm not going to pick a side on whos right and whos wrong wiht changing internals on jenifers car. Just would bring a word of caution if it looks like it could be a problem maybe just change the internals to be on the safe side.

Just out of interest, someone told me never to turbo my auto. I'm wondering why Rob? And i'm assuming your not chanign anythign with her auto step up are you?

Dude best of luck and just remember, you still have to be able to beat her at the race track. Dont forget about your car!

dude there is no need to start a fight here, you can bring a horse to water but you can't make him drink. Maybe you need to relax man! If he busts his gfs car then there is little you can do about it, though from talking with him in person I'd say he knows just about everything he needs to, to get this job done safely.

Max, I might listen to what your saying if I cared. I honestly have about 23 grand just to blow but my girl wants to do it cheapest way possible. Rebuild kit is $999 and ive thought of everything your saying. If it blows, I BUY NEW ONE, if it doesnt, I was right.

We are gonna get the tranny rebuilt but that will come later on. If turboing this car makes ANYTHING blow, NOTHING WILL BLOW RIGHT AWAY!!!!!! Ordered the exhaust mani, x-over pipe, and turbo mani yesterday. Hoping to be done with this by Christmas

ShEaNy 10-19-2002 08:27 PM

wow how are u getting the cash for this....and id like some..lol

AzCivic 10-19-2002 11:24 PM

Someone already makes a turbo kit for the Fbodies. So just get that and not have to deal with making custom crap.

Because I want to build one myself and do it how I want with what I want. We are trying to do it the cheapest way possible and I can buy all the parts for a turbo kit and do it myself and save $3500.
