Downshift to slowdown?
Yes I am pretty new at Drving stick, no body teach me but I got a hang of it in my 61 Ford the second try LOL, Ford is being restored, i like these old cars with fins ;) , anyway now i have a good looking 3rd gen Prelude SI 1991 and want to know if i use downshift to slow my car will it damage my engine?
considering your slip the clust back in, your only wearing the clutch

Wear the clutch or wear the breaks.... a combo of both with extend the life of both... |
cool! more downshift for me, sounds cool when the engine rev up and the car stopping...
I'm not sure you save any money in the long run, I agree its fun and do it all the time. Just remember you burn gas now when trying to stop, now your burning 3 things, gas, breaks, and clutch.
If you blip the throttle to match revs you'll lessen the wear on your clutch. More gas consumed though.
clutch repair>brake job>gas
i'll let the gear im in pull me down a little, preludes get brake fade easy, so if im coming off the highway or slowing down at the track, i'll get use downshifting as much as possible so i can actualy use my brakes below 60mph |
Id rather wear brakes.. They are less work to change..;)
 I just read an article about that the other day. It says that downshifting to slow down does wear the clutch, & I agree with Rice, I've had to change 2 clutches now & that sux sooooo much worse than doing the brakes. Takes WAY longer & is much more expensive.
Engine braking is inconsequential unless you're flying down a mountain road with the brakes on fire, so yes, downshifting is just wearing the clutch out.

yeah.. and clutch jobs in FWD are a PITA. its a DIY on rear wheel if your semi mechanicaly handy, but FWD you almost godda be certified mechanic!
really? damn...
i used to do that too.....but then when i noticed my clutch was starting to go i stopped.....id rather just use my brakes more than my clutch to stop.
:D :D Certified mechanic? I have changed my own clutch twice. ;)
I know I'm not certified, but i didn't seem to jack anything up. so I couldn't have done that bad. |
im just saying its ALOT harder... well at least a prelude clutch is
 It is harder. lotta tight spaces under my hood. I just pretty muchly disconnected my motor, but left it in the engine compartment hangin on a cherry picker I pulled up. Worked pretty well. 1st time took me 12 hours! :D 2nd time took me 8.
ah that doesn't sound too bad, I got a Hoist to do it... if it needs replacement.
yeah... a hoist makes it ALOT easyer. if you are using jack stands and a 3ton jack, then its now fun
Ahh, hondas are cake compared to AWD GSX eclipse..
