What's the purpose of a spoiler on a Honda?

The last time I checked the spoiler is supposed to push the back of a car down thus giving it more traction, but Hondas are front wheel drive vehicles. So besides looks what purpose does the spoiler serve on a Honda?

basically NONE

Accord Man 08-11-2002 08:37 PM

for the looks perhaps?

though, I wouldnt..

aerodynamics at higher speeds. keeps the car more planted... but this is the little stock wings. anything more bends your trunk and looks awfull. then it turned from a aerodynamic flow to wind drag.

I copied this from another post hopefully this will give you the idea.

When talking about downforce you should increase downforce in both the front or the back to keep air from getting under the car and causing it to "float" at highspeeds and over bumps. Granted some of those wings are alittle overkill. But to say a wing on the back of a FWD car is pointless is a false statement. Why would FWD touring cars run them if all they did was hurt performance. I dont think they would, do you?

Downforce pushes downward on the car keeping the tires a little more firmly on the ground. The biggest time you will see a benefit is went you come up over a small hump when you can usually feel it lift, after installing a wing and a front spoiler the car feels so much more planted. By increasing or decreasing downforce you can also increase and decrease oversteer and understeer. This is where adjustablity comes into play. It takes a lot more work then just bolting it on to get it to work. Although most people dont go this far, it still helps.

Im not saying that the bigger the wing the better. I dont particular care for wings at all, but a smaller one that serves a purpose isnt that bad.

Not all wings have a purpose but some do.

umm,,,,,I just like how my spoiler looks...LOL:D

As far as shopping cart spoilers, look dumb and be cheap. Factory spoiler on a 2nd gen teg looks good though :)

ChrisCantSkate 08-12-2002 04:20 PM

i was behind a porsche today and realized something. the manufacures at porshce realized spoilers dont do shit at low speeds, so at 50mph the wing comes up from the trunk.

Should there be a sticky for this question? Seems like this damn Q gets asked alot......:o

Most stock spoilers are for looks. Not to mention that there's really only one Honda I can think of that would take advantage of a spoiler.......... mmmmmm NSX.

s2k could use a good spoiler.. too!

I bought mine because I like the way it looks. It doesn't help my car at all, just looks.

Wren57 08-12-2002 10:15 PM

Some spoilers, if tested properly to increase downforce with little to no increase of drag, work well to push down on the back wheels. This downforce on the rear wheels keeps the balance of downforce on the car, so the rear doesnt slip around and end up in front of the... well, front... so basically you cant have the front of your car planted to the ground and have the back flying in the air. Its for stability at high speeds, and I mean 80mph+. Below that it is weight, drag, and sometimes an eyesore:crazy: .

toykilla 08-13-2002 07:57 PM

looks

i wouldn't say weight. my wing is so light. i think it's about the weight of a gallon of water (not that heavy) and it's not aluminum either.

Ditto. Then again I'm just not much into spoilers anyhow.

yeha but when racing you could get the trunk lid off, and lose some more lbs;) i really doon't care too much about racing, so it won't be too much of a loss to me

foxygrandma 08-14-2002 07:56 AM

i reallylike the way spoilers look. but they cant be really big and stipid, thay have to lok realistic. i have plans on buidng my own *small* aluminum wing. i also do a ot of driving over 80mph so a wing could be some benifit. im not saying it will cuz i do liek the way spoilers look. ok, im ready for my bashing.

ebpda9 08-14-2002 08:02 AM

don't worry i like spoilers too, as long as they do not require a control tower to let me go ;)
