UFC vs. WCL vs. PRIDE

So lately I'm wondering why UFC is so much more popular than other fighting leagues. I caught a WCL (World Combat League...formed by Chuck Norris!) match and thought the format was cooler than UFC. Two fighters fight in one 3 minute round and, assuming you don't get knocked out, you come back and fight in a second round later...tournament style (the way UFC used to be). The PRIDE league also seems better...it's a LOT more brutal since fewer moves are illegal. Plus the fighters all seem to be more single-style based (again, like UFC used to be). That..and as far as I know WLC and PRIDE are only shown on the Versus network, not on Spike TV. The more I watch UFC fights the more it seems like pro wrestling to me. They seem to focus so much on fighter's histories and creating rivalries. Plus very few fighters seem to be true masters of any one style...they know just enough to get by. Sorry, but if you train in boxing, wrestling, kickboxing, and Jiu Jitsu all at once there's a good chance you'll suck at all 4 of them. If you watch old UFC fights you had guys like Royce Gracie fighting...a true master who ruined people's shit like nobody's business. But that figures since Gracie's family created Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. So it begs the question...is it just better marketing that pushes UFC out in front when it seems like an inferior format?

Yes.. I believe it's just better marketing. It's like everything else the more publicity, the more fans, the more fans, the more revenue and so on. You see UFC shit everywhere anymore. You even see UFC reality shows.

I agree with you, I'd much rather watch PRIDE then UFC and I've never even seen WCL (whats that tell you.) I love UFC when it first started.. Very few rules, just all out punishment. I wouldn't say that UFC is nearly as bad as Pro wrestling by a long shot, but it has definitely strayed away from what I enjoyed most.

As for why people cross train, it really boils down to being able to compete with different types of fighting styles. Most fighters learn different fighting styles, but still really excel in one particular one. If you are a boxer, then you want to stay on your feet and protect against the take down.. but you have to know how to defend it and counter it. I definitely wouldn't say that any of those fighters suck at all of the styles they fight in just because they don't focus on one particular fighting style. Sure they would probably be better at that one fighting style if they focused on that 100%.. But in my opinion, knowledge is power. It's better to be good at many things then great at one.

PRIDE all the way dude. It's more brutal. However, I still do watch UFC. It's just there is nothing else on TV. I would rather watch UFC than all these freaking game shows. At least by watching UFC, I still see fockers getting punched..... WCL sucks ass. I like the idea of the "league" style like UFC used to be. But the fights are not brutal enough.... but guess what, I still prefer to watch that than other junks on TV...... Dont even turn your channel to Speed. That place is comprised of 80% NASCAR shitz.... Might as well call it NASCAR channel.......

im pist that cro cop left pride and went to ufc. i cant believe that monster would settle for a contract that limits him from his full potential. i like ufc, ill watch it. you just got to understand that pride isnt fought here in the us and the us government was the ones that enforced the ufc to limit how fights are done because of the fatalities and crippling of people.

I dont doubt that Crocop will again merge to Pride. He will get bored at UFC.....

Anyone watch IFL last night? It wasn't to bad for being on local television.

GT40FIED 03-13-2007 11:46 AM

Didn't catch it. It wasn't on any of the channels that I get. Trust me...TV was so boring last night I would've known. I pretty much just watch WCL and PRIDE matches these days anyway. IFC stuff isn't hardly ever on.

The gayest thing ever

Ok...so I used to think professional wrestling was the gayest spectacle ever. I mean really...think about it..it's a bunch of guys, usually in spandex, grabbing each other's junk and whatnot. Well, I was wrong. I caught an episode of the shitty FX show about ultimate fighting the other night. Considering it's billed as some sort of all-out no holds barred fighting event, it's homoerotic latency is ridiculous. After about a minute or two, every fight ends up in what me and my roommate refer to as "the manball". Two guys hit the mat and move around in a fashion that would make porn stars blush. Seriously...how can this be billed as such a manly sport when it looks like one guy is trying tofuck another guy who's resisting. Pro wrestling is no doubt incredibly homoerotic and ridiculously white trash...but the UFC seems to be just tripping over itself to outdo wrestling in the arena of gayness.

Atleast you now know that you prefer homoerotic latency and "the manball" over regular television these days.

Oh I still think it looks pretty damn gay. At least UFC, anyhow. Whenever 2 grown men are on the floor, one on top of the other, you should never use the phrase "mounted". And that position they like to call "north/south"...yeah, regular people generally call that a "69". Stand-up fights are fun to watch, but once it goes to the ground (aka "manball mode") it gets really uncomfortable really fast. Even my mom commented on how it looked kind of gay the other day when she walked through the room.

Caught another WCL match tonight and I gotta say I'm liking it more and more every time I see it. PRIDE is still cooler, but WCL is a lot more actual full contact martial arts than UFC. In WCL there's no grappling (which, unless you're a jiu jitsu expert rarely comes up in martial arts), you get points taken away for backing away from an attack, and you get points deducted for things like stalling the match or clenching. That's half of what pisses me off about the UFC. The matches that are good are usually really good...but then there's way too many that consist mostly of guys holding onto each other like they're in love and one is leaving for a 6 months stint in the peace corp. That's just a waste of time, really.
