bye bye synchros

unbelievable. The other night i get in my car, and all of a sudden my 3rd gear grinds every time i shift up to it. I don't know how it could happen cause i haven't grinded a gear in ages and my car only has 57K miles.

i figure i'll have to look into some of the famouse GM synchromesh tranny fluid. Any other ideas or things to look for?

They dont go when you mis-shift and grind, they tend to go faster when you shift in the higher rpm's.
Dont get too upset, honda trannies arent exactly the toughest things out there...my 3rd has a slight grind too.

GM synchromesh (friction modified) fluid - Part # 12377916.
Its a lot more than honda mtf, but it does work (as a bandaid).
Next thing, if you feel like spending the cash, is buy new synchros.

yeah, hondas great idea for brass syncros... well... sucked. "lets use an extremely soft metal for something thats going to take on alot of wear"

JDMFantasy2k 05-30-2005 11:11 AM

nah i'm not about to buy new synchros, if anything i'd be saving for a swap. thanks for the support

If you do decide to get new synchros, get the Gear Speed version. Tougher material and coated. GM synchromesh does magic...........

ebpda9 05-30-2005 11:49 AM

or you could get an automatic. never grinds ;)

ChrisCantSkate 05-30-2005 03:04 PM

how much is that GM stuff? i need to replace my tranny fluid soon.

pdiggitydogg 05-30-2005 03:33 PM

Some dealers really want to rip you off on it for $15/qt
Others will sell it at list of $11-12 or less (Ive heard $9)

ChrisCantSkate 05-30-2005 04:06 PM

hmm.. i'll ask my room mate if he knows of a place when he gets back... he's big into the z28 scene

nonovurbizniz 05-30-2005 10:44 PM

the penzoil packaged version is cheaper and they're who produce it for GM...

I use the non friction modified one... just because that's what autozone stocks.

pdiggitydogg 05-31-2005 05:28 AM

I still cant get that stuff here....

AzCivic 05-31-2005 11:08 PM

the stuff took me from grinding 3rd while shifting at anything ovr 5grand to chirping 3rd when shifting at redline in my last tranny.

nonovurbizniz 06-01-2005 08:03 AM

yeah I had whirring and grinding at like 80k miles... I JUST replaced the trans with 204k...

I'd say it'll get some extra miles out of the trans to say the least.

And I BEAT on my car daily.

nonovurbizniz 06-01-2005 03:03 PM
