Probability on message boards

In my many years on internet message boards, I've noticed many things follow laws of probability. That is to say, as a given discussion continues, the probability that someone will draw an inference to something completely unrelated increases. For instance...as a debate continues on and the longer it becomes, the likelyhood that someone will be compared unfavorably to Hitler will approach 1. Not to say that there are many other ways one can be compared to Hitler...but that's neither here nor there. That's about as constructive as getting into an argument with a black person and becoming so frustrated that you throw out the "N" word. It's inflamatory with no intellectual value. Likewise, the probability of anyone presenting an opinion post-9/11 that does not follow government approved speaking points being labeled as "unpatriotic" or "hating America" inevitably approaches 1. Trust me on that...I know for a fact. I suppose I can chalk that up to zeitgeist...whatever.

It has also come to my attention that as any given post becomes longer and contains bigger words, the probability that it will be overlooked and/or ignored by people who posted in a thread about masturbation multiple times will also approach 1.

I can't be the only one who's noticed stuff like this...so let's hear it. What message board inevitabilities do you notice?

Those and leg humping the new girls, asking them for pics

Violent Apathy 04-21-2005 05:53 PM

Why do you hate America, Adolf? :pfft:

CD5Passion 04-21-2005 06:20 PM

You are correct, Steve... and you know why that is, don't you?

As an argument increases in length, people with less solid and/or poorly formed arguments begin to lose the argument. Knowing that they have lost, they choose to stray off topic; it is an argumentative/debate tactic known as diversion. The key is to not let your opponent change topic away from the one at hand, the one he has implicitly conceded defeat to by using the diversionary tactic. Thus, the more intelligent and well-formed ideas are able to carry longer throughout a thread, while the half-wits are lost early. This is also why the "How often do you masturbate" thread is still going; there is no deep thought to it, and why other in depth threads die somewhat soon. Not to imply anyone here in particular is of less intelligence, it is merely a fact of statistics that given a sample population, there will be a variance in degrees of intelligence. It is all very simple, really. :)

ps- Man the weather is crazy here today. It was rainy, sunny, hailed for a while, sunny, monsoon, now it is clear (although dark)... ;)

Well...at least I know someone else gets it:D

Weather was fucked up here too. Tornado warning galore. You have no idea how annoying it is to hear a civil defense siren go off for 1 1/2 hours non-stop.

Ha ha ha.... see I'm different. I could give a flying a fuk about whether or not I'm winning or losing a debate. I just simply do not debate. Whether a fact is a fact or not, there is always an individual out there who has something to say. Current events are even more sensitive. I just tend to keep shit to myself and try to get along with people as much as I can. The wierd thing is, I do read most of these so-called sensitive subjects like religion, race, 9-11, Bush, Military, Iraq, blah blah blah to absorb a some form of contradiction against myself. I guess it teaches me. Although I may not throw my 2 Lincoln in the pile, but I do see the aspect of learning from you fockers .

yes, we are about to get a freaking thunderstorm tonight. I better save all my porn to my external HD.......:o:nana: :flick:

I've also just realized that the longer you watch Bill O'Reilly the probability that he will give the president praise bordering on fellatio also approaches 1.

everyone needs to have sex ( with another person or with himself :D) but not everyone needs to think

ChrisCantSkate 04-22-2005 12:33 AM

the longer the thread, the more chance someone will respond with just a smiley face

the longer any topic goes on the more chance polotics and or god gets brought into it

yeah and the leg humpers always get in before page 2 :D

Violent Apathy 04-22-2005 12:55 AM

mavaaoife 04-22-2005 08:23 AM

hah I noticed that.. Ive also noticed how people like to start up other threads to make fun of people... If they get a good reaction they will continually post pics and/or post that same pic up time and time again.. If they do not get a good reaction they kinda shut up and stay to the back...

Well, the way I see it. If I think I can, somewhat, add something to a thread that shows a bit of intelligence, I'll try and share it. Sometimes it goes good, sometimes bad. I know I started a few threads, some went 2 pages, others only went 4 responses, to me it's no big deal, if you want to say something, say it, if not, no big deal either.
