How strong/good is my engine? Lots of questions!

I was wondering what is the catchy number name tag for my 94 ex vtec motor? Also, how good is the engine in this car? It only has 85 k on it and doesnt burn an oil... are they pretty strong? I know most people use the DOHC engines but are there people out there that use this engine? Can you make much power with them? Other than forced induction whats a good mod for this motor? Are there any heads out there that I could put on it, or could I deck my head which bumps the compression and port it and make more power? Do people do this to these engines? Am I crazy for asking?

I'm basically just wondering about my motor.. is it decent? can you make power with it? Thanks for the help!

i do believe its a F22a. sohc. correct me if im wrong.

the engine is extremely reliable. one of the well built motors from honda. will last for ever. if kept on good maintance.

as for burning oil question. yes they are strong. i wouldnt expect to burn oil till 160+ miles.

for are their people using this motor. every day. good for boost or build and still be a reliable daily driver.

as for how much power. depends on what you spend your money on. how you build it. but it is capable of high numbers.

FI is the only way to go with a F series motor. all motor is pointless.

you could swap a H23 head on it. it would make the block a dohc. give it 150hp if done right.

yes people do it to that engine. i can give you links to how to swap heads.

Thanks for the reply it was alot of help! Yes I would like to see some of the links for the swap... Also what does that head come off of? Is it that involved? Do you have to change the computer or any other electronics or is it just the head swap? Also... the motor already makes 145 horse - stock is it really worth it to put that head on it? Also what are some FI kits for this motor?

the head is off an H23a1 or h22a1 prelude. i think you need adjust the gasket and thats all. here are some links.

for FI companys. ask Hondaman-IAC hes the boards sponser. he cna hook you up on that.

you have a f22b2 and it's a sohc vtec. the engine is pretty freaking strong if maintained. i rock 174+ k miles on mine and still has 195psi compression. Boost is the only way to go on that engine, or you could get a reground cam from www.deltacamshaft.com for some more hp. the engine has very very little duration and not enough lift on it. other than that is a perfect engine. just a word of advice: do not rev it too high because you might get valve float.

BadBowtie03 03-26-2005 01:58 AM

Hey guys thanks for the help! but, hey that delta camshaft site didnt work... it said it did not exist or something... I read alot about the swap it was really interesting... I was thinking of some more questions... To make some good all around NA power it seems like I could deck the head on my engine to make more compression which in turn makes more power, add a new cam, some port work and some headers... Can you deck these heads to make more power? Does that soud like a good plan? Also, do these motors like nitrous? how big of a shot? What company makes a good kit?

IALuder 03-26-2005 05:00 AM

n2o is good if used right. but its like boost. build the motor and it can take more of it. zex is a good kit. the motor could take 50 75 shot as is. but becareful using it.

are you sure h-serise heads will fit on a f22? i was under the impression that it wouldnt work. if so, why not just go for the h22 head?

ebpda9 03-26-2005 10:19 AM

i doubt the h series head will fit on the blocks. the h engines hold the head with 16 studs, the f series hold the head with only 12 studs

ChrisCantSkate 03-26-2005 11:31 AM

yeah thats what i thought. im pretty sure i remember someone saying they used a f22b dohc head on a f22 block. i think that with a turbo is your best route

IALuder 03-26-2005 03:23 PM

check that honda-tech link. a guy actually did it. it wasnt that expensive either.

i would just build that f22 up and boost it.
