Tranny Work

Thought Id share the pics my mom took when she snuck up on me working in the garage today.

By this time I had already dropped the tranny and swapped out the input shaft bearing and oil seal (and damn it I forgot to take write-up pics!)

straight west coastin crip style yo!
(i look retarded)

By this time, I had also cut my hand with the wire cutting section of a pair of needle nose pliers. Hurt like a bitch. Im expecting the skin to fall off and gain an awesome scar on my left hand.

(I have a neat idea for some artsy-fartsy pics too...I'll take those some other time when she's cleaner....

Realigning the countershaft, mainshaft, all 3 shift forks, AND the interlock bolt is a GIANT pain in the ass.

sicones 03-20-2005 01:01 PM

you took it out by youreslf???

pdiggitydogg 03-20-2005 01:09 PM

yeah...wasnt hard really. Not too heavy either. Ive just been picking it up to move it when I need to

ebpda9 03-20-2005 03:27 PM

what happpened to your pimp wheels ??

pdiggitydogg 03-20-2005 03:34 PM

Snow happened. In the winter I use the old ones w/ fat snow tires

mylittlecivic 03-20-2005 06:32 PM

nice gloves, looks like you had fun

pdiggitydogg 03-20-2005 11:25 PM

gloves are sweet, I know.
They did save the chunk of flesh from getting totally removed by the pliers though.
(I am now afraid of pliers)

ShEaNy 03-21-2005 11:14 AM

lol.. looks like u had some fun...i hate tranny work...:mad:

CD5Passion 03-22-2005 07:34 AM

never once have I tried that much work before haha, most I can do is body work
and pliers do suck

Mischief 03-22-2005 10:35 AM

I put on an intake and swapped my tail lights yesterday! that's about the only thing I can do though ;)

pdiggitydogg 03-22-2005 07:53 PM

holy crap...I finally was able to get a hand to finish today! Technically Ive been done since sunday, but couldnt get anyone over to help me put the damn thing in until tonight!
I gotta say...getting it back in is a huge pain and not anywhere what Id call easy (much more time consuming than I had thought....stupid splines).

I still have some things to button up tomorrow...but here's hopin my problem is all solved :luck:

KwikR6 03-23-2005 12:28 AM

Damn man....I love workign on cars...too bad I didn't live near you or else I would help.
Hope all works well....

WESTSIDE!!!!

MissJDM 03-23-2005 01:30 AM

Lol. PAT is so gangsta.

I would help ya too! Only I've only helped with two tranny swaps in my life...a 2001 VW Bug..and a 92 EG. Close enough though. :)

Oh, anyone know where I can find like, XS gloves? The Smalls are a little too big at the tips so it feels funky, like when I have screws between my fingers.

pdiggitydogg 03-23-2005 07:25 AM

Maybe a medical supply store?
I have XL on there and as you can see, theyre slightly too short for my treefrog/monkey fingers

ChrisCantSkate 03-23-2005 10:17 AM

fun stuff... i had to switch my tranny to my new block when i did my swap, but that wasnt too bad cause i had both blocks out of the car next to each other on the floor

ShEaNy 03-23-2005 11:55 AM

ive helped swap/change out 3 trannies on the same car....it never got easier any time...lol always a new problem....damn nissans....

pdiggitydogg 03-23-2005 02:30 PM

I was tempted to just drop the engine and put them together, actually. Then I could borrow my neighbor's lift and put the whole set back in as one.

ChrisCantSkate 03-23-2005 02:36 PM

it did make it 10x easier. if i ever have to do tranny work again, i might puill the engine

thermal 03-23-2005 08:30 PM

Nice work Pdiggs. I didnt bother playing around on my tranny. My tuner is gonna rebuild it for me and re-check the LSD. I have a feeling that the 3rd gear and LSD on mine is bad.

Next thing you know, you are doing swaps mang. It really gets easy after the first time on any major work. I've taken off a few trannies already, even did a GSR by myself. My weak ass found ways to align and lift that shit with floor jacks... lol.

pdiggitydogg 03-23-2005 08:59 PM

Daaaaang! How did you get the tranny off the floor and onto the jack w/o it falling down? I could pick it up in place and attempt to align it myself...but then I got tired and had to put it down.

I thought the inside of the tranny was pretty neat. Should have taken pics (damn again). Like Az, I feel confident that I could do tranny work now. Now I just need to tear into the engine and replace something stupid way in there and I'll be set ;)

thermal 03-23-2005 10:10 PM

Kind of hard to explain it. I'll have my somebody take pics next time. My friend used to just lay the tranny on his chest and push it up. That shit is crazy.....

holy cowholes. I couldn't even move my tranny from one side of the garage to the next. lol

ShEaNy 03-24-2005 10:37 AM

thats what i did....basically bench pressed it up there....and my buddy aligned it and bolted her in..*flexs*

ChrisCantSkate 03-24-2005 11:34 AM

how much does a tranny weigh? i did kinda lift mine and carry it around to switch it between blocks, but i did pull my back doing it.

KwikR6 03-24-2005 02:33 PM

Yeah they aren't that heavy. I pulled one off my ex's accord and just carried it around.

MissJDM 03-25-2005 06:19 PM

They're like 75lbs. The big reason why it'd probably difficult for me is because of its size.

Dude, I'm like 5'1 with short arms.

pdiggitydogg 03-25-2005 06:51 PM

Yeah, Id say roughly 80lbs or so. I was lifting mine with one arm without much effort.
