loose timing belt ?

i noticed that my car lately had a major loss of power, and i was in dire need of a valve lash adjustament, so i just did it yesterday. Oneweird thing i noticed was that the timing belt was kinda loose( just not enough to slip over teeth). the belt looks like it was changed since it does not have any cracks or any signes of wear on it. i know it can be tightened but does anyone know how to do it ?

P.S. Does anyone know of an online shop that sells metric feeler gauges ? i couldn't find one locally even at the autoparts stores or speciality stores.

On a 92 LS, hm, don't you just tighten the tensioner?

ebpda9 10-09-2004 07:57 AM

i think i just need to readjust the tensioner, but how ? i know it was supposed to have an opening for it, but i can't reakky find it.

It's right on the side of the engine, below the timing belt cover, right above the crank pulley. There's like a hole and the bolt is sticking in there.

gotcha. i think i missed that because the front frame is right in front of the frame. how am i supposed to tighten it ? just loosen the screw up and turn the engineabout 180 degrees then tighten the tensioner up ?

You should just be able to tighten the bolt on the tensioner? I feel so bad, what if I am wrong? Then you'll all really think girls can't do anything with cars. lol

ebpda9 10-09-2004 07:50 PM

lol, well i think i just need to get my shop manuals working again

MissJDM 10-09-2004 08:39 PM

but really, I was serious on the tips and procedures lol. Did you try it?

MissJDM 10-10-2004 03:01 PM

 I guess not.

Hey i think you can buy a feeler gauge right from honda. MY friend got one from them

Nelsmar 10-21-2004 02:14 PM

just take a 12mm socket(i think) and a 2 inch extension on a ratchet and turn it 1/2 a turn counter clockwise, around there... or until tight, if 1/4 a turn tightens it leave it there, thats how it was on our zc. when we replaced the timing belt.

funny story, we changed water pump and put old belt on, no tensioner lmao... we slid it on(gosh that was hard took about 2 hours)

btw what is a feeler guage used for? a page i went to(looked at picture first : P) had somethign to do with a valve adjustment

ebpda9 10-23-2004 12:31 PM

well the feeler gauge can be sed for many other things besides a valve adjustament like measuring the piston ring gap.

well i had some instructions that would say to briong the car at tdc, losen the bolt, move the crank pulley till the belt comes tight, then tigten it to the torque specs. also i read a lot of stories where the 14mm socket would just get jammed on the bolt head. i don't wanna do that and have my car useless for a few days
