I need speed - money is no object. What can I do to my engine?
Well guys, the time has come. I want my car to go faster. Much faster. When I say money is no object, by that I mean to about $2,000 or so, maybe a little more. I want my car faster...it already looks and handles nice, so I'm not worried about that.
The motor is a D16z SOHC VTEC 1.6L 16valve 125 HP stock. I have put on Accel wires and an APC short ram air intake. Would a new camshaft setup do me good? I was going to buy one, but decided not to. What about exhaust? Since my motor's not really pushing too much power anyway, I don't think a new exhaust would really help. Anyway, do you guys know of anything? - Dzur |
I would say turbo man. THat's ur only fast way out. Maybe a swap but with a turbo it will be a lot faster!
|
You have 125 hp stock not 135...well if your looking for lots of power your only gonna get it with a turbo or a new motor thats your best bet right there.........
|
Grrr....motor swaps intimidate me.:dunce:

Get a damn turbo. Talk to Hondaman-iac for some good deals. Peace! |
how many miles are on your car anyways... u shouldnt do a turbo with a cabillion miles on it
|
The car has 120,000 on it (as of yesterday). Should I even bother with it? Sigh...I love going fast, but all the fast cars (Evo 7, WRX STi) cost so much money. *sniff*
- Dzur |
Hehe, buy my B16
|
turbo
|
Dude get a swap.
Can you afford to blow your D16 if something goes wrong with the turbo? Or if you decide to boost more? Bring yoru car and A LOT of beer up here, I'll do the swap..hahaha jk But seriously, I wanted a turbo, and I was like yay turbo's are great! Then my friend turbo'd his D and blew it up. Now he can't really afford to buy another D block because he spent all his money on his turbo.... Your call, I can't make up your mind, because remember, ultimately, it's your decision. But my gut told me to do a swap. So I did! |

im with this guy. i had a del sol with a Bsomething(18c1 i think) swap give me a damn good run for my money |
if money was no object you wouldn't be driving a Civic.
|
Save the 2k. Your honda is slow, and will still be slow after 2k. I'm not trying to be an ass, but it is true. If you must attempt to make it faster, I say save your money and when you have enough funds, by a b20b and turbo it...

I was looking into the k20a, but its very pricey. GeneralDzur if you like to drive fast maybe you should modify your suspension and brakes so atleast youll have better handling. You can take turns better and stop better which is ideal if you like to drive like a maniac. I don't think the 1.6 sohc vtec can handle turbo. If your really want a car with more kick, you need a new car or engine swap. |
^thats not even an idea for him. a K20 wont work in a sol.
i would save up and get a B18 BorC. what ever you wish. a turbo will blow the motor you got due to miles. if you dont want to blow your motor or swap it. get header and exhuast. |

this reminds me of when you wanted to make your highlander fast and we told you to save your money and you didnt listen:cool: he just wants to make his current car faster |
Hah, word on that. I have since learned the error of my past ways. The highlander was awesome though, even after just $600 in modes. ;) I really liked the idea of a 2jz in it, but a rwd manual just wouldnt work without tons of custom fab ($$$) :(.

Get your d16 checked out (leak down & compression) to see if it can handle boost. If it can then go with turbo. It will really wake the motor up and even if you kill it, d's are cheap to replace.
Turbo D's will take out the average Bseries motor'd car (stock) along with lots of other things. Plus you'd get to say "yeah its turbo'd" I dont know if that matters, but its fun to say it anyways. |

I don't think it will matter whether you get a B18 b,c,l,m,n,o,p or whatever.. save your money and get a new base to start with.. by new base I mean new car. And when I say new I mean new to you not new to the world. Figure out what you can get money wise for your car, add that to your $2000 and buy something else. I saw a nice 1968 RS camaro for about $8000. White with blue stripes.. looked very nice.. new paint.. almost new interior. Had a NNM 327 in it too. |

although i 100% agree... i dont think thats the answer he wants  |
which was my reasoning

I was looking at the k20a for myself |
a k will work in any car...all it takes is $
|

whats cheaper to replace a blown dseries engine or a blown b series engine??? either one turbo'd by an idiot will blow. |
for 2G a K20 wont work. maybe if he gets more dough he can.
but right now for his options. i would say get a B18B and Boost that. boosting a D with 120K isnt worth it. |
My next car will be 2004 WRX with sunroof, but I wish.

please explain this... |
because he cant afford sleeves amd rods and pistons and shit too.
|
uhh so.

Which is true But the B would be NA obviously. I'm saying my opinion on this. So he spends the money on the turbo..blows the D...nothing. Or Get's a B, leaves it NA has a decently "peppy" car now, with a steady mind that nothing is goign wrong with his turbo set up! Just what I think..he asked for opinions... |
I heard the s13 can handle boost, but its not like your gonna put that in a Honda.
|
s13 is a chassis code for a 240sx. I believe you mean a sr20?
regardless, if you want to spend money on it, I would go with a b20b... 8.8 compression... 126hp @ 5400 and 133ft/lbs@ 4300. Then turbo it. ;) |

I'll look into it. I talked to a guy over at Aluminum Head (a shop where I live) and he said he'd rebuild my motor completely (with new crank, etc..) for $1700....but I don't know - I could buy a new motor for that. - Dzur |
turbo it and if u blow it then get a new one. Plain and simple.

the k20a2 out of the rsx is the only k series he would want to buy why buy the k20a3 (si) when its the same as a B16 but dont rev to 8k? What you do it find a wrecked Pilot ( i think) rip out that block K24a put the rsx head on it and build that. saw that make 294 whp in a magazine after a little tuning;) probably a little more than 2k but hey think of all that without running premium! Dont know the gas prices around so maybe premium isnt so bad,.

is that with forged internals? if so thats not too bad. that and a 100shot will definitly take care of most cars on the street. |
..... Bottom line is, $2000 is not enough.....
and yes, a turboed D16 at 10 psi can and will take any unmodified B-series swapped civic coupe out there except maybe an ITR motor swap, since I have not done it yet. The rest were nuthin but a cake walk. I raced an 01 ITR 3 times and beat it 3 times.... even let it get a head start twice. This is with 2 people in my car plus a big ass subwoofer. The ITR only has the driver.... |
Hmmm...a guy at New Image (a shop) has a GSR B18 swap w/ 40,000 miles on it, and he will swap it (with 2 year warranty) for $4000. But...so...*gasp*...much money.
Maybe I'll just save and go to college and never realize my dream of going fast. - Dzur |
