Burning smell under my hood - please advise
Well, everytime I drive the del Sol for a while I start smelling this burning smell like....maybe oil or rubber. Before you answer anything, read below:
1) It's good on oil - just got an oiil change 2) Coolant is good - not too full or low. The engine isn't running hot 3) I have no known oil leaks) It smells like it's coming from under either my cam cover on the right...or maybe my header. When I opened the hood up after a drive, a little bit of white smoke drifted out from under my header cover. Any ideas anyone? - Dzur |
when you did the oil change did you notice any coolant in it? Anything white?
|
Ill bet ur frying ur clutch and dont know it.

I usually change my own oil, but this time I took it to Valvoline so I could get all the fluid's topped off since I don't have all the xtra stuff, so I didn't see the oil.
About the clutch - how could I be frying it? Clutching too slow? Or clutching at too high RPM's? I usually let the car wind down to about 2,500 before out-clutching - Dzur |
double check the oil ... thats what the smell was in my car turns out i was burning a lil bit of oil rather quickly ....

That's probably why. I'm not sure if the del sol is the same as the accord, but on the accord the oil filter sits right above the axle and exhaust. When changing the filter they usually spill some on the axle and exhaust and, when the exhaust gets hot, it burns off. It can take a couple hundred of miles to burn off. When I change my own oil, I'm much more careful and I also clean up any spillage, so I don't get the burning oil smell. It's probably that, in which case the best way to get rid of it is to do a good long drive to heat everything up and get all the oil off. If you make lots of short trips it'll take longer to get all the oil off. b |
Yeah that might be it and the same with the white smoke coming from the headers.

Spilt oil.
Check oil again..and keep checkign it just incase. Or clutch could be the issue also. |
let your car cool down, and get underneath. I beleive your filter is on the back center of the engine. Get a sme rags, and a water spray bottle (those ones that you pump a few times, then hold down the trigger and it sprays works really good.)
anywhere you see oil, clean it off. exhaust pipe, engine block, anywhere that gets hot. as far as you might be toasting the clutch, make sure you are putting it in all the way, and letting it out all the way also. If you have a lazy foot, that might be the cause. also, check to make sure your floor mat isn't in the way of the clutch pedal. |
Thanks guys. I think it was just some oil on the headers.

Header! |
Uh, there are two headers coming off my engine, right? Hence the plural "headers"
- Dzur |
no...you have 1 header...

My bad, my bad. I should just put a massive four-pipe exhaust system on it...yes, that would be the ultimate...and a MASSIVE um...ok never mind...
lol - thanks for the correction. - Dzur |
It's not a big deal. I've seen a 4 tip exhaust system on a sol.
Me no likey. |
Well, I'm not really into flashy exhaust systems, or massive tips, or high-pitched fart pipes...or any of that crap. Give me a nice, warm-toned subtle exhaust setup with good flow, and that's all I ask.
- Dzur |
im down with getting the most use out of something! looks wont help me determine if i get something, it all matters how applicable it is, like an exhaust that is more useful than flashy, but if they both work together, its fine with me!
