Quick chemistry question

In stainless steel, there are several elements present. Are these elements a mixture (each sill in elemental state, but mixed together) or do they exast as part of a compound (chemiccal bonded to one another), or both??

any idea?

pdiggitydogg 01-27-2004 05:37 PM

if its a metal grouping wouldnt it be an alloy rather than either of those?
I guess if you have to go with one or the other go w/ compound
(mixtures can be easily separated in physical ways)

Grip72 01-27-2004 05:40 PM

yea but this mixture CAN be seperated...can't it?

and i have to explain it

pimpinprelude 01-27-2004 05:53 PM

its a mixture.. its has like 15 percent chromium.. and uhh.. other stuff... but each piece is different...

A mixture consists of two or more unlike substances that do not react chemically. Simple mixtures can be separated by mechanical means. Any combination of solid, liquid or gas can be a simple mixture. A mixture is different than a compound, where the substances react and combine chemically.

hope that helps

now this is a good ?....  I'd have to ponder on that but I'm sure you don't have alot of time..;)

Grip72 01-27-2004 05:58 PM

pimpinprelude.....that helps..so its NOT both then??

Grip72 01-27-2004 05:59 PM

also..didn't the substance HAVE to react chemically to form a new substance which would be a property of a compound?

pdiggitydogg 01-27-2004 06:32 PM

Did research!

Chromium (and sometimes nickel too) is added to steel to make stainless steel

steel = iron and carbon
stainless steel = steel + chromium

A compound is any 2 or more elements combined.
Steel is a compound - so adding one anything else to it would make it a mixture....because its not a grouping of 2+ elements at that point...rather a combination of a compound and an element.

Stainless Steel = MIXTURE

thanks man..i pretty much copy and pasted pimpinpreludes answer

pdiggitydogg 01-27-2004 06:35 PM

Don't look at it as you did it for nothing....you learned something new. It was well worth your time and energy  ;)

pimpinprelude 01-28-2004 03:39 PM

YOU WANNA FIGHT ABOUT IT PDIGGS??!

LOL

pdiggitydogg 01-28-2004 04:58 PM

Bring it son! lol

I got a D in Chem in high school....that was by far the worst grade I've ever received in my life. Never took it again either.:pukey

It's a hard subject and my teacher is a idiot. For example we were talking about cars for some reason and he said that aftermarket turbo's are illegal for noise polution or w/e . After a 15 minute argument with him about it he finnaly changed the subject and never admited he was wrong.
