gettin new cam?

Okay, first of all...hey to all the regulars! I have a '90 Honda Civic si. I was thinking of putting a new cam in it but wasnt too sure of that would be a good idea. It only has a few mods...K&N airflow, tie bars, lowering springs, crossdrilled rotors, modified exhaust, and just a little valve adjustment. This car has the original motor with 185,000 miles. I just want a little more pep without over-taxing the engine. I just wanted some mid-range...something to make it a little more fun. Thanks for the input!

Id say go for it...if the engine runs fine a little more oomf isnt a bad thing
depending on the level of the increase you'll want to upgrade the rest of the valvetrain as well...or perhaps just update everything with new honda parts if the cam is rather mild.

Zex cams are very nice and very affordable...though Im not 100% sure if the d16a6's head will accomodate for the cams designed for a z6...of course you could always call and find out throught zex directly.

or...

they have a comparison chart for all three vtec heads and several cams

Thanks a ton!!!...engine runs great for the age..been well taken care of.

What other valvetrain stuff would you say needs to be done? I mean yea, I want it to be relatively mild because this car is an everyday driver. Just want some mid-range boost. I'll check into it with Zex.

or ypou can have the cam custom ground from crower or delatacams. i know delta makes some mild designs.

if the setup is mild then you probably just need to go with nothing other than a valvetrain checkup from honda
the more aggressive then Id say springs, retainers, the whole lot

you want more pep go turbo. oh yea.

cams: my vote is on Zex. seen those on friends 91HB. they really made a differnce. but he also had AEM intake, Dc Headers and cat back.

Thanks for the tips...dont really want to go turbo..too high end for what I want and pretty stressful on the already old motor. I know, I know...swap out the motor but dont think I'm quite ready for that. I'll look at zex though. Thanks!!!;)

i think a compression test would be a good idea, just so you have an idea of how the motor is holdin' up..

AzCivic 01-22-2004 01:47 AM

uhhh zex is a vtec cam, so its not gonna work. look at the exospeed website for a good non-vtec cam.

hellshockshade 01-22-2004 09:43 AM

Yep..yer right. Looks like exospeed might have what I need...and some nice head packages too. ;)

I would go with a Skunk2 Stage I cam for your ride, they add a good amount of mid-high.
