WTF?! Transmission Problem?

Ok...i hate my life and my car is stupid.

I went to get groceries at safeway and there was a tiny patch of ice and my tires spun in first gear....all of a sudden, my car won't engage into ANY gear, not even reverse. It just makes a sort of soft grinding noise. (so of course i cus, etc etc) I manage to push my car into a parking spot and try it again. This time it works fine! So i go get groceries and when i'm leaving the parking lot, it does the same thing and this time i'm fuked!! So i push it into a parking spot and gather my groceries into a shopping cart and push them home, 2 blocks away...ANyways...is my tranny hooped or what?
  And if so, how much does it cost to fix/buy a new tranny for my 91 Honda Accord 5spd?

Grip72 01-16-2004 06:11 PM

no one knows??

IALuder 01-16-2004 08:50 PM

500-700 used. depends on how many miles are on the tranny or if its a rebuild. could be you clutch tho.

AzCivic 01-16-2004 11:34 PM

thats weird, why would it just quite after losing traction?

Grip72 01-16-2004 11:36 PM

i have NO idea....some people have thrown these ideas at me:
- Cv drive axle is fuked
- Transmission related problem
- Clutch
- Shifter LInkage

ebpda9 01-17-2004 01:15 AM

i'd say the clutch is fried.

i don't think that the tranny could go bad just from spinning out of control but it might be ur clutch but most likely the shift linkeage. Oh btw the tranny should be around 300-400 if u do it ur self.

HndaTch627 01-17-2004 05:45 PM

you broke an axle i'm willing to bet

Civickid0to60 01-17-2004 06:44 PM

go get it diagnosed.

AzCivic 01-17-2004 07:28 PM

was it just one wheel that lost traction?

Grip72 01-17-2004 08:33 PM

i think it was just one wheel that lost traction. I got it towed today and it will be diagnosed on Monday at the earliest..so i'll let ya'll know what's up once i find out..i think its my drive axle is hooped..i wonder how much that'll be :(

AzCivic 01-17-2004 08:48 PM

i've heard but cant verify that if one wheel spins too fast while the other just sits that problems can come up, i cant remeber what problems though.

ebpda9 01-18-2004 03:36 PM

maybe the differential ? i know mine does that all the time, but that shouldn't prevent the car from getting in gear

Grip72 01-18-2004 06:52 PM

i know..it happened before..but i'll just have to wait and see what they say tomorrow when they look at it

Grip72 01-19-2004 09:34 AM

Well, the transmission place just called. He said that my driver's side axle broke  and my passanger side axle is leaking. SO they are going to replace both of them and it'll run me roughly $500 after taxes. So its not too bad. But i'm just wondering, HOW THE HELL DID THAT HAPPEN?!!? How in the world do i break an axle? That confuses me. I just replaced the the driver's axle about a year ago when the CV Joints were worn out! Weird...my poor, poor Old decrepid car....

AzCivic 01-19-2004 04:58 PM

500$!!!! you could do it yourself for like $150

ebpda9 01-19-2004 05:04 PM

i think he is talking CAD not USD. anyway that is weirdfor an axle to snap on that car. it's not long at all and the car does make only an eye popping 125hp with 140ft-lbs of tq

Grip72 01-19-2004 06:42 PM

yes i am talking canadian funds...
i just picked up my car and it was $474 total.
-2 new diff axel seals
-new lube gear
-1 exchange rebuilt DS axel assembly
-labour

HndaTch627 01-20-2004 01:10 AM

actualltt not so weird, your tire broke loose and prolly hit a good 80mph(remeber the spinning tire is moving twice as fast as the speedo reads) before catching traction, the shearing force the axle went under when that tire caught traction again is insane, that's what snapped it. $450CAD is fairly cheap, a Honda Reman Axle is $180USD

AzCivic 01-20-2004 12:49 PM

axles for my civic from autozone with a lifetime warranty are like 70bucks US.

EX1994 01-20-2004 12:52 PM

I bet something is just slipping
