I use to have an auto, 1, 2, D3, D4 and I would auto shift it. Did a couple of times for racing, but I saw no point unless you want to physically change your shift points. I notice with mine that it would go about 200 rpm short of redlining before it would shift, which I beleive was around six grand or at six grand. It was the only auto I have owned, so I don't know if that was normal.

anyone know what's the benifit if any

If you want to protect your tranny, don't shift the auto, let it do the work. People do it though.

How: Put it in 1st, step on gas. When it almost redlines, shift to 2nd, etc.

it does make a difference in most cases I've seen but it's just healthy for the tranny, just save the trouble and get an manual

yes, ive tryed this myself, it sorta works out, but you notice that the response when you "shift" gears takes a while to shift to the next gear, unlike traditional shifting with a manual which is more responsive. on most cars (hondas i presume), when you floor it, the transmission automatically downshifts, so that makes manually shifting an auto useless :)
