BMW 323is vs 2000 Honda Civic Si

I was on my way back to work from one of our plants. Well on the way back my CD Player died. Well that pissed me off since its about a $700 player. So I'm rolling down the off-ramp messing with my radio attempting to get it to work. Of course I get stuck at the stop light.

As I'm trying in vain to make it come back to life, I keep hearing this "mustang-like" reving (you know the deep, raspy, throaty sound). I look around. Nothing. I resume messing around. The reving starts again. I look next to me and its a BMW 323is making all the noise. Ok he either wants to race or his car won't stay running unless he keeps doing that. So I see him make a slight grin out of the corner of his mouth. Ok he wants to race. So I give it a slight touch o the gas. We both wait impatiently for the light to turn.....

The light hits GREEN. I drop it from 2k. I take off almost perfectly as does he. We round the corner. I shift to second. We nose to nose. I hit 5500. WHAM! I throw it in third gear. That was all she wrote. I pulled about 3/4 car length ahead. Then we hit the stop light.

As we stop, I look over to give a thumbs up. He was just shaking his head. I could imagine the thoughts in his head. "I just lost to a Civic."

Anyhow this was my first "real" race since getting my Si back in late October 2001. I looked up the specs on his car just to make sure the guy just wasn't a horrible driver. I was a bit suprised to see the numbers.

1998 323is
2.5-liter DOHC 24-valve inline 6-cylinder
168 hp @ 5,500 rpm
181 lb-ft of torque @ 3,950 rpm
5-speed manual transmission

You've become a master of the stick huh?!

Congrats!

94_AcCoRd_EX 11-30-2001 06:31 PM

Nice kill. It feels good to beat someone who thinks they are superior.

Matrix 12-01-2001 09:59 AM

That's the best part. I have none. :) Oh wait I did remove the front "H" and the "CIVIC" badges. That's 10hp. Oh then there's the PIAA headlights, that good for 7hp.....

j/p....

It felt damn good.....

KwikR6 12-01-2001 12:11 PM

yes winning does feel good.
Oh do you have any stickers bekause we all know they going to add like 5-10 hp per sticker.
Good kill yo.

Well its the slow starts that I've yet to master. I do the fast ones pretty easily.

TruHeel142 12-01-2001 04:05 PM

Nice one, taking out the 3 series!

A stock Si can take a 323i???

Imagine if you put any mods on, you'll be tearing up m series in no time.

TruHeel142 12-01-2001 04:21 PM

It could happen.....

With nitrous, 20 psi of turbo, i/e, rip the back seats out, pray, and yeah, it could happen! M3's & 5's are overrated anyways! ;)

Wow! Is it really that slow? That's not any better than a 318ti !
Is that for a manual or automatic? :o

TruHeel142 12-01-2001 09:24 PM

9.3 sec. for a BMW????

That is terrible, and kinda hard to believe. Are you sure about that??

Accord Man 12-01-2001 11:51 PM

WOW that is insanely slow..

Thats pretty insulting for a BmW..

Manual. Its the only way the 323is's come. Hey I gotta admit I was amazed when I beat him too. The specs are close though.

The M Series still scare me.

M3 Coupe
Liters/type/valves 3.2/inline 6/24
Displacement cu cm 3246
Bore/stroke in 3.43/3.58
Nominal output/rpm hp 333/7900
Max. torque/rpm lb-ft 262/4900
WEIGHT 3415 lbs

M5
Liter/type/valves 5/V-8/32
Displacement cu cm 4941
Bore/stroke in 3.70/3.50
Nominal output/rpm hp 394/6600
Max. torque/rpm lb-ft 368/3800
WEIGHT 4024 lbs

But they are fairly heavy.....

Once I did battle with what looked to be a regular E-class..

Turnes out it was an Brabus tuned E-class..
Pumping a little over 400 hp..

He smoked me.

well i think BMW's are a bit overrated. My friend has a 2000 528i. He used to think that his car was the shiat, but i proved him wrong. It was more like a rally thru the woods and abandoned streets. The only advantage he had was during turns, i was kind of losing it. And it wasn't a 1/4 mile race, we raced for 10 miles. Noe he has some respect for the torqueless wonders called Honda

mmm mmm honda. There is a reason why we all have one. But seriously I do have to agree with ya. I think BMW's are really over rated. I woulnd't get one. I was thinking about buying one over my civic. But That was a short thought.

Well i'm not saying they are not good cars. They just get all the hype because they are expensive. If a car is expensive does not make it a good car, or something better. Take the example of the boxter which was smoked by the s2k.

TruHeel142 12-04-2001 03:01 PM

Bmw's are all about luxury these days. A modded Honda will blow a 5 series out of the water every day of the week. Also, I think the s2000's are the most underrated cars there are. Stock, those can take 99.9% of all cars on the roads these days. The .1% being my Teg(lol) and some decent ferrari's and porsche's.

Integra's will do fine for now, and I can't wait till I start smoking those cocky b*stards in their Beamers!!!

Matrix 12-04-2001 07:43 PM

Just a little?!
I know more than a few cars that can take the S2000 and cost almost half as much. In many circles, it (S2000) is known as "the torque-less wonder." ::no::

oww *** not again. People should understand once and for all that honda's are not torqueless. They have enough torque compared to the engines of the same displacement, they just have more horsepower, and it is a shame to comapre a honda with a car that has twice the displacement, and twice the number of pistons. Usually honda's will make their power at higher rpm's, and by the time they start making the real power, the other cars are at their maximum rpms (any higher and the engine will blow into pieces).

Dude, I understand what you're saying. But do you know what it means when it's time to race? Absolutely nothing.

"...but you've got 2x the number cylinders I do!"
"...but your peak power is at a lower RPM!"
"...but you have 2x the displacement!"

All that is meaningless. I hope the guy in the Camaro (Z28 or SS) can hear you over the roar of his exhaust from 5 carlengths ahead.
The ~$40,000 S2000 has less torque than either of my cars did when they were stock.

Racing Rice 12-05-2001 08:42 AM

I agree man... The s2000 (2.0L) puts out 240HP @ 8300 RPMs and 153 lb ft @ 7500 RPM's.

The problem with the S2000 is you have no lowend, which really takes the fun away from stand still starts.

Now lets compare that with an Audi TT Quattro (1.8L motor) 225Hp @ 5900 and 207 lb ft @ 5500.

I dont know but compared to the Audi... The S2000 is pretty Torqueless..

Dont get me wrong man.. I love the S2000, but it has some room for improvements. HP is a little over rated if you ask me, since all it is, is a Theortical figure derived from Torque.

Torque is your acceleration...

KwikR6 12-05-2001 10:46 AM

if ya have as much horse's under the hood as you want. But if you have no torque and your racing. Well you got a lot of catching up to do. he'll be laughin before you catch up.

Accord Man 12-05-2001 11:55 AM

Actually the S200 sint that bad on take-off's..

If you wind up enough, its pretyt much as explosive as any other.

You said it though... If you wind up enough.. I personally dont drive like that all the time, so It kinda sucks. Your right tho, that does indeed help.

ebpda9 12-05-2001 10:22 PM

i drove few s2000 and i say that you gotta hate the car to dive it. I mean that if u rev it around 3k rpms it just takes off. i wanna se the s2000 type r next year with a 2.5 l engine on it. Anybody knows any specs about it ? I think it will put out somewhere between 280-320 hp.

Accord Man 12-06-2001 08:01 AM

Damn I didnt even know there was an R coming out next year..

RR : true, you need to compensate for the lack of torque.. And that sucks cause you kinda feel like you'Re hurting the car..
But dont forget, that is a characteristic common for most of our rides..

Oh well, hope the newer bigger engine will help a little on that aspect.
