h22 or b16?

hey guys i really don't know what way to go i kinda want the jdm b16 b/c it's a smaller motor but still makes a good mount of horsepower but it has like no trq. another reason i like it over the h22 is that it not as expensce as the h22 although i wuld like tohave h22 i don't know what changes i would need to make to make the swap work and i need a reliable companys site that sells h22 for fairly cheap thanks

Well, this all depends on which vehicle you're putting this motor into. The H22 is far superior to the B16. However, if you're putting the H22 into anything but a Prelude... forget about enjoying driving... unless of cours all you do is drive in a straight line. The H22 is much too large for most of the smaller chassis and will through off the vehicles balance. If you're building a pure race car then go with the H22... but if you ever plan on driving it on the street then don't waste your time with it.

What kind of car do you have

ShEaNy 03-19-2003 09:50 PM

the h22..will fit into..most or all accords...what car do u have?

AzCivic 03-20-2003 06:17 AM

I'm assuming he's talking about a Civic.

A FWD car is never balanced, so its(H22) not going to mess much of anything up. Do a search on google and you'll find a crap load of stuff about it. And yes you can keep your AC incase you were wondering. This should get you started.

yeah sorry it would be for a 94 hatchback

TeriyakiBroccoli 03-20-2003 09:17 AM

why not a b18c1? They're cheap, affordable, make good power, and easy to swap.

B16 makes too little power to be a competitor... jdm or usdm.

H22a is just too hard to mount to make it worthwhile. The b18 is most definately a better platform.

ebpda9 03-20-2003 11:49 AM

for a civic go b18

espo42 03-20-2003 02:07 PM

yeah i would go with b18 or a ls/vtec but that's more expensive

espo42 03-20-2003 02:10 PM

it seems everywhere i have seen b18 are more expensive

Addict 03-21-2003 02:34 PM

The B18B should be less than the B16B. The B18B is the non-VTEC LS motor. The B18C1 is the GSR motor and is usually pricey.

If you want all motor, then the B18C1 is a better choice. The B series will drop right in (with the addition of the rear motor mount). The H22 will require a little more work

turbowhat_n_dat 04-01-2003 10:20 PM

I havent had the priviledge of installing a H22 into a hatch, but, our sister shop in town did.

My choice would be to go B16/H22, but, all others seem to want other things because of ease and cost factors.

Now I did get the chance to ride in that hatch, f*ck is that thing fast........doesnt rattle, doesnt clunk, doesnt bang, nothing. Runs like a champ, put urethane mounts in the thing so that prolly helped out some. Has a clutchmasters stage 3 w/lightened clutch masters flywheel. Its non turbo for now, but, the kit is in production. This is prolly my reasoning for the H22.

peace......f*ck bin laden........go Army.............

I'm gonna have to second the H22 idea.

My buddy has one is his 95 hatch, and that thing is fast as hell.

I/H/E, we have video of it outrunning a C5 Corvette.

On top of that, Jun just put out their H22 camshafts. Yummy.

keystone 04-09-2003 09:45 PM

b18c1's are usually about $3000 b18c5's are about $5000

2ndGenTeg 04-09-2003 10:19 PM

Or you can get a JDM H22 for $2500

turbowhat_n_dat 04-10-2003 04:00 AM

can now purchase mounts for the H22 at a moderate cost of $300.00 compared to the old cost of almost $1000.00.

Good choice, dump a $500.00 zex kit on it, f*cker ell haul.

Peace,

Actually paying $2500 for a JDM H22 is a rip. We sell them for $2100 with ECU, tranny, harness, manifolds etc... To answer your question....we have had many people come in with the civic HB's like you have and wanted to swap a H22A into their car. I encourage this swap. The H22A is the most polular swap in the whole bunch of Honda engines. I would also reccomend the b16a2 swap or b18c GSR swap. The b16a2 swap is $2K, and the GSR swap is $3,100. Check it out at http://no advertising businesses wit...lking to chief

espo42 04-13-2003 08:39 PM

yeah i dunno i havn't decided yet . First i'm trying to find out how much labor would cost for to put in a jdm h22 and i heard it is possible to keep ur a/c so that would be on that too. So if anyone has this swap done or know how much labor would be please post. O yeah and SSR about ur motors do u ship the motors with axles, and all other necessary parts? does it come with lsd? thanks

silver 04-14-2003 02:44 PM

espo, where are you located?
in socal you can do a b16 swap for $1600 out the door.
you find the right guy...even cheaper.
as for swapping the h22 it will of course be more and when I have driven h22 powered hb's I felt that the turning ability disappeared.

espo42 04-15-2003 05:15 PM

I'm located in PA man that b16 swap u were talking about is cheap . I'm pretty sure u can't get a deal like that here in PA . Where did they buy their b16 from?

So when you turned the wheel the car just went straight then?

silver 04-16-2003 10:26 AM

no the car didn't go straight, you know what I mean. try taking a 35mph turn at 60 as you should be able to, I didn't particularly enjoy that.

as for the b16's price, they are going for around a grand right now and then $600 for labor. The standard price for the swap is now between $1600 and $1800 out the door. sr20 swaps are beginning to fall too, now down to $3k. There is so much competition now due since everyone knows how to swap a motor that there is less of a market for shops since people are doing it themselves or they know someone who can do it.

...stolen b16's go for under a grand installed...

h0ndakilla 04-24-2003 06:55 PM

I got a 92 hatch, where can I get the b18C1, I went to JDMpower.net and i found the b18C, is that the same? do you think its worth it.. and how much does installation cost?
