Diff btween coilovers and "springs with threaded collars"?

Someone said that there was a big difference between these, but I don't know what it is. How can you tell which is which?

True coilovers have a threaded shock body and are a matched spring/strut (shock) combo.

Coilover sleeves require an aftermarket strut but can still be height adjusted.
