My daily driver is a '98 Civic HX with CVT and the wife drives a Grand Caravan. Now that the step-daughters are in college, and there's only my wife and 7-year old daughter, I've convinced her that we don't need something with 7 seats, so next Monday (23 Dec), we're taking delivery of a 2003 Accord Sedan EX-L. Since the 3k mile mark on the Civic, I've used synthetic oil and special oil filters, and change the oil myself once a year. I plan on doing the same with the new Accord. Those of you with the new (7th gen) Accord, any problems so far? Thanks.

welcome to HS. i guess there will be no hondastylin' for you ;) but one world of advice: don't leave the oil in there for a year. Clean oil is clean oil, no matter ho syntetic it is, and you should really change the oil every 3k miles till the 36k mark, cause you will get all kinds of shavings off the engine being new. Just my $0.02

Once a year for the oil is not even close to often enough (even if you don't drive it hardly, it needs to be done more often).

With today's CNC machining techniques, an engine is pretty much broken in by 3000 miles. The recommended oil change every 3000 miles merely fills the coffers of those recommending it. A quality synthetic (unblended) with a full cotton-batting filter (no pleated paper) is recommended to be changed every 24000 miles or once per year. "Dinosaur oil", made from fossils, will break down into it's constituent benzene, varnish, etc. The only breakdown of synthetic occurs at very high temperature, which would have already melted your head and valves by that point. My five-year-old Civic has almost 100k miles with 5 oil/filter changes and takes no oil, leaks no oil, and I've had no problems whatsoever...except for an oxygen sensor at 80k miles. I plan on using synthetic for the next 100k miles. <g>

Care to show me some references so I can read up on this? I've NEVER heard of it being a good idea to wait longer than 3-4k to change the oil. I'm not saying you're wrong, but I'd like some more info.

Sure. Just do a search on google for synthetic oil, or do a more specific search for amsoil. I think all pure synthetics are pretty much the same, and the only reason I choose Amsoil is because it was recommended by a life-long friend that I grew up with, who is also an M.E., and an amateur racer who does his own engine work.
