What OS are you running?

Well?

I use Windows 2K at home on both PCs and XP at work. I personally think 2K is a better OS.

ohiochica 12-10-2002 08:09 AM

i am running a "bad girl" version of windows xp............shhhhhhhhhhhhhh

ebpda9 12-10-2002 08:31 AM

running win 2k on both of my computers. i can't stand the candywrap interface of win xp. i really hate xp. even if my computer is doing nothing xp is taking at least 33% of the cpu usage. win 2k is the big 0 or up to 3% of cpu usage. the only thing i like about xp is the fast boot time

Racing Rice 12-10-2002 09:16 AM

XP will hog up some bandwidth too, if you dont get rid of the QoS stuff.

WinXP Pro, Win2k Pro, & Win2k Server @ Home

I like XP Pro. Its actually handles resources better than 2k. I never had any issues with Win2k though, so I can't complain.

You were the last person I expected to see say that you liked XP..

nonovurbizniz 12-10-2002 10:20 AM

XP rocks.... I had SOOOOO many problems with 2000 when it first came out (ya I know it was made for business machines) It was 6 months after I had it installed that I finally got my video card to work.

XP I plug in my video camera to a usb or firewire port and it's like "hey you have a sony digital 8 handy cam what do you want to do?"

that kicks ass.

Sucks that they finally stopped giving free windows updateds to illegal users though.

Yep. After I 'de-gayed' it, its running great. Just have to disable any un-needed services and remove themes.

94_AcCoRd_EX 12-10-2002 11:10 AM

I run 2k and XP home. 2k is by far a better OS IMHO. Nice and stripped, like I like it.

edit: Oh yeah, I'm dual booting Mandrake 9 on one of my boxes too.

Accord Man 12-10-2002 11:19 AM

2k Pro.

I used to run WIN2k for a long time. Then I started using XP. I kinda like it. The little features and all that. I just formatted so Ineed to skin it again, to make it look better!
I'm also thinking about picking up a P1 200mhz or somethign like that and toying around with it as a server with linux or something.

please do!

Addict 12-11-2002 10:43 AM

Services that can be disabled
Application Layer Gateway Service
Automatic Updates
ClipBook
DHCP Client (be sure you are using a static IP address)
Human Interface Device Access
Internet Connection Firewall (be sure you have another means to prevent unauthorized access prior)
Routing & Remote Access
Wireless Zero Configuration
Messenger (this will also help to prevent the 'new' spam messages, but will prevent you from using net send command)

Other tips...
-Set the theme to Windows Classic. This will remove all the pretty buttons & such.
-Turn off Font Smoothing (Display Properties->Appearance->Effects->"Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts"(uncheck the box)
-In the same place, uncheck "Show shadows under menus"
-Turn your monitor refresh rate up to as high as your monitor will allow. Please check you manual prior. You can seriously damage the monitor with the wrong refresh rate. Most monitors can do 72Hz with no problems. XP's default is 60Hz.

That's all I can think of for now.

Mushroom 12-11-2002 01:53 PM

Valhalla (7.3)... 42 days uptime on my main machine.
Also, xp at work.
98se on 2 machines and solaris 8 on one at home.
Oh, and digital unix running on my db server. Gonna move that one to linux too.
