Car Trouble...

Ok i took my car into the shop today and got one of my mechanic buddies to take a look at it. The driver's side CV Boot is cracked and leaking grease and the upper ball joint is screwed. So i hafta replace both. i am getting prices from more places tomorrow on my lunch. i am just curious as to how hard it is to install a CV Boot Kit and a upper ball joint? Would i be able to do this at home or at the shop? And also, how do i know if i need a new CV Joint AND Boot kit or JUST a CV Boot Kit??? tHX

the upper balljoint is not replaceable. you gotta replace the whole arm with it. better change the whole driveshaft if the boot is cracked and leaking

It isn't that hard to do this. Especially if you have a shop, you could probably do it yourself. DO NOT get one of those boots that you can just put the grease in & wrap around. Get the WHOLE arm! I had this problem, & we tried to get one of those other boots & it busted after like a week! I think most places (well, around here anyway) will give you a lifetime guarantee on that half shaft. Keep your receipt.

yeah the shaft will have the lifetime warranty nut not the rubber boot. if the rubber breaks again it won't be under warranty. it's kind of weird how thigs work

Ok. i bought a CV boot with grease and the rings. A mechanic is gonna help me do it tomorrow after work. At that point, before we take the old CV boot off, i'll ask him to check the entire CV joint and what needs to be replaced. I'm gonna hol doff on the balljoint/control assembly for a little bit. THE WHOLE DRIVESHAFT?? how hard is that man? and how expenive? Do u mean like CV Joints/boots and axles?

How do i know if i have to replace the whole driveshaft? what are tell-tale signs of this?
