blind man helps sort the mail

"I can just tell that there's more cards coming through the mail," Frank Facio, a worker at the facility, told ABCNEWS affiliate KGTV in San Diego recently. "On Mother's Day, too, there's more cards."
But Facio can't actually see the increased volume of mail — because he's blind.

‘Can’t Do It?’ Yes, He Can

Facio started losing his sight at age 17 because of retinitis pigmentosa, a hereditary disease that destroys the retina.

Admittedly, it took some convincing to get supervisors to hire him, but now they are definitely convinced.

"When you first hear about somthing like that you're going, '[He] can't do it, can't do it,'" said George Agius, a co-worker. "He can keep up with the best of us."

Robots are used for initial sorting at the San Diego facility, but 2,000-plus employees, including Facio, do the major processing.

Facio did the same job in Phoenix before moving to San Diego several years ago. He processes anywhere from 20,000 to 40,000 pieces of mail a day.

Numbers in Braille allow Facio to do what's called the sweep — getting mail into the right bins.

As Dylan, his guide dog, looks on, Facio says he's able to do what he does because of a simple philosophy.
