Engine swap...

Due to some unfortunate circumstances, i need to take on an engine swap.

Where can I get an engine for a decent price that preferably has some sort of warranty or something on it?

Also, if I were to put a b series into my 97 ex, would i experience any problems along the lines of ecu or anything else like that??

thanks.

I dont think any place is going to give you any kind of warranty, except 'start-up'.
Import Auto Salvage, Honda motors online, Total jdm, Junk yards and online classified ads are the best places to look

Youre going to need an ecu from that engine (whatever you decide), preferably from the same obd series, unless you want to use a harness adapter

Hit up the search man, lots of info available

hmm maybe i can work out a deal with hmotors online tomorrow for a b series. i need to order one too

i'll let you know...

wheresmylicense 10-10-2005 10:10 PM

would a b18 (IT-R) motor fit in a civ? or do i have to stick with the b16?

pdiggitydogg 10-10-2005 10:35 PM

all b series are pretty much bolt in
if you use the jdm itr tranny, youre going to have to use strage axles, because theyre 36mm, instead of 32

wheresmylicense 10-10-2005 10:39 PM

are the proper axles hard to find? what about the si engine mounts that i need?

wheresmylicense 10-10-2005 10:50 PM

also, what is lsd versus non-lsd?

does it matter if you're switching the obd if you get all of the parts from the donor car?

pdiggitydogg 10-10-2005 10:52 PM

since the tranny is 36mm and your hubs are 32, it would be custom, unless you can find jdm itr axles (i think theyre tapered like that, maybe not). Usdm itr transmissions are not like this

You need an em1 timing mount and studs, em1 rear T/L bracket, B series front lower tranny mount, b series front lower tq mount (crv p7j or del sol vtec p54 (not p30) if you want A/C. Using the p7j does not allow power steering)

the site that i'm looking at sells hasport engine mount kits. if i bought the one for use with a 96-00 civic with a b-series engine swap, will it include all of those mounts and brackets?

pdiggitydogg 10-10-2005 11:26 PM

Doubt it, but call and ask. Personally, I dont see the reason to dump that much on hasport mounts when there are other companies that make them too, for less. Stiffer mounts will make your interior rattle and buzz.

LSD is limited slip diff, I really dont feel like explaining how they work:D Just search and you'll learn the difference. lsd is going to make it cost more... But it kinda seems like you have money to spend

have any of you guys dealt with password: jdm before? it's looking like that's who i'm going to end up going with. are they reputable, or should i stay away from them?

password is good in my book. i bought a set of ctr wheels off of them and my gf bought a pair of eg6 doors and folding mirrors. where are you located in cali? might be cheaper to just find a shop and get an all inclusive price then piecing it together. that way you won't end up with pieces missing that you would have needed or with more pieces then you would have needed. plus you end up possibly developing a relationship with the shop and if things don't go as smoothly as planned, they may be cool and help you out.

as for the lsd, it helps with your traction by shifting torque to the non slipping wheel. so instead of both wheels always having the same amount of tq, it shifts it back and forth to give you tq to where you need it. i would recommend it if you are looking to do some spirited twisty driving.

I like them too, I suggest you talk to Leo if you call. He actually knows what he's talking about.

wheresmylicense 10-11-2005 02:43 PM

i checked em out (and i did talk to leo. cool guy.) and actually asked them what shop they refer to... turns out the guy at that shop (i forget the name) buys the engine (for much cheaper) and puts it in. he's going to charge me 3500 out the door for a b16. i was pretty excited when i found all of this out. thanks for your help once again, guys.

silver 10-11-2005 03:40 PM

what is included in that price? it's a little high to me. labor for the swap shouldn't be more than $500, it's not a multiday job. and is that for the lsd tranny or standard?

don't want to see you get taken advantage of.

wheresmylicense 10-11-2005 03:56 PM

's for everything. and i forgot to ask whether that was lsd or not. but yea, compared to the price i was getting from password, it's pretty dang good. i mean, when i say he's doing it all, i mean he's doing axles, shift linkage, yadda, yadda....

ebpda9 10-11-2005 04:01 PM

i just ordered mine from hmotors. the guy seemed to be veru honest and told me that my engine will take 2 weeks to get to me.

pdiggitydogg 10-11-2005 04:13 PM

What are you going to do with the b18a, stefan?
