Hey Guys

I have a 90 Civic Si with an auto tranny.

I would like to swap it out for a manual.

I also just recived a free engine and tranny out of a 92 Civic Si.

The question I have is how can I tell for shure what the engine and Tranny are??

Next will the tranny fit into my Civic?

I am pretty shure the engine will fit from resurch but no one has any info about the tranny's.

This is my first import project so any help would be much appreciated.

on the front of the engine near where the tranny hooks upto it there is an engine code. it problblt ways something like d16 ot b16 with some numbers after it. that is your engine code. tyhe tranny i think has a long list of numbers somewhere on it but im not sure how to find it.

i believe the tranny in a 90 civic is cable operated while the 92 is hydraulic, if so you might need a conversion kit from a place like hasport or something. but seeing as how the original tranny is auto I'm not sure how that'd work, i guess you'd just need all the hydraulic bits out of a 92+ civic. other than that they're both dseries engines so it should bolt right up. good luck.

oh are you gonna swap in the engine too? I would if it was in good condition.

Out to the garage tomorrow to find out what then engine actually is.

And yes the idea is to swap out then engine and tranny.

Both will be rebuilt before they go in. and if the engine is not a vtec will swap heads, along with a few other internal mods.

but my first job is to get the tranny in with all the set up needed.

P.S. Is there somewhere I can get the tranny codes to find out the ratios and what car it is out of, supposed to have been a 92 Si.

if it really was out of a 92si, the engine should be a d16z6 which is SOHC w/ vtec on the intake valves and the tranny should be a s20 B000. gear ratios:
1: 3.25
2: 1.9
3: 1.25
4: 0.909
5: 0.75
Final Drive: 4.25

You wouldn't happen to know if the ratio's are different in the 90-91 trannys would you??

automatic or manual? definitely different than the auto. as for the manual, not much different at all, might even be better to go w/ a 88-91 SI tranny. 4th is slightly more aggresive. the 92-95 5th is a little better for the highway though.

88-91 SI ratios:
1: 3.25
2: 1.894
3: 1.259
4: .937
5: .771
Final: 4.25

Do you know if the gears are changeable between the two.

I'm not really sure. What gears would you change?

I'd take fourth out of the 91 and put into the 92 but probably wouldn't make any real difference.

I really dont think you can mix hydro and cable gears together

yeah i don't think so either, at least not w/out grinding a few things here and there. but really it wouldn't be worth the trouble even if it did fit properly.

Ya didn't think it would be the best thing to do...


Talking with a buddy, he figures the 92 will fit just fine so time to start looking for a LSD.

Any recomendations??

This car will be driven on a daily basic in all sorts of weather as we get -40 Celsius to +40 Celsius.
(ya I'm Canadia)
Mostly highway driving to, if that makes a difference.
