Timing Belt Life

Is the life of the timing belt a mileage or time issue? My Mother-in-law's 90 Accord has only 33k miles and the dealer has recommended that the timing belt be replaced due to age. Are they looking out for her or just looking for business?

they are just looking out for business. just take the timing belt upper cover off and look for any signs that the belt is tired (cracks oil on it) and if u see none of that don't worry.

is the cover very accessable?

have it changed.

13-14 years old is a pretty old timing belt, and it might be wise to have it change. Honda recommends 90k on a normally driven vehicle/

My vote's to replace it... of course that's without looking at it. Either way, it's still pretty damn old for a belt.

For a 13 year old vehicle, I would recommend changing it. It could be dry-rotted or simply cracked. Usually, manufacturers recommend changing the timing belt after 70k miles, although you can go longer w/o doing so. The conciquences are severe, however, if the timing belt blows on you. Go ahead have it done, better safe then sorry.

33k miles, I think u do her a favor and port&polish, get a new ecu ,bolt on stage II, and a cat back for the dear old ladie... she'llappriciate it when she's the first one of the entrance ramp to block traffic doing 30mph........

Just check out the belt like hondaman said. I got a 92 accord and have never changed the timing belt till a week ago. I never noticed that it was tearing on the sides and i was going back and forth out of town. Just check it out.

tearing on the sides ? mine never did that. i changed mine because the dealer replced the water pump and did some minor work to the engine

look at it this way if it breaks and bends all the valves causing a cyld head overhaul? maybe it would be easier just to change it now? a little cheaper too!

Hell ya, 33k on a 90 Accord is hella LOW! Garaged much?
