Folding@Home - Let's try this again

Folding@Home is a project run by Stanford University which simulates protein folding, the root of the cause of cancer. If a protein folds incorrectly it can lead to cancerous growth. This program studies how a particular protein folds to see how we can stop incorrectly folding proteins and effectively ELIMINATE cancer completely.

This is a great cause and you can contribute for free! You can run this simulation on your computer without losing any performance as well. F@H is designed to be the lowest priority task running. If you fire up a game F@H will stop, wait for you to finish, and resume when you are done. This is the case with any program that needs cpu cycles. Folding backs off and lets you use your rig with no performance loss.

Here is a link to a review regarding performance loss while folding (or lack thereof): Folding Benchmarks

if you want to help out here are links to ultra easy installers. all you do is double click the exe or bat file and you are done! no maintenence, no checking on it, no starting it, no nothing. its installed as a service so it starts with your computer.

Windows 2000 / XP Single CPU Systems

Windows 2000 / XP Dual CPU or Hyperthreading Systems

Windows 98 / SE / Me

Maxvla and myself (and Addict also - if he's still folding) have been going at this for quite some time now. Why waste your extra CPU cycles when you could be using them for a good cause?

ebpda9 03-23-2004 03:23 PM

i hear you. let me change my drives and get some memory and i'll be back at it again. both of my systems are crawling now

94_AcCoRd_EX 03-23-2004 10:55 PM

Sweet! Thanks Stefan :)

c0ng0 b0ng0 03-24-2004 01:20 AM

so wait your saying i can run these programs all day and night and it will help fix cancer?

Maxvla 03-26-2004 12:23 AM

exactly :)

Senshi 03-27-2004 07:37 PM

of course very slowing i actually run folding, you pretty much just leave it open and since it has a priority level of low it doesn't draw alot of system resources, so it pretty much itsn't there even tho it is

That's cool that you're already folding. What team do you fold for?

Anyone else interested?

ShagginJet 03-31-2004 07:38 PM

I've been doing this since you showed us the link originally. I run it on 3 pc's, a p3 1000, pii 400, athlon xp 1900. U all fold for group 32, right?

94_AcCoRd_EX 03-31-2004 07:46 PM

That's really cool, I didn't know anybody stuck with it. Yeah, team 32.

If any of you are interested in helping Maxvla and myself win a little friendly bet, you could fold under "OSUmaxx" ;) That is, if you don't care about following your own stats.

ShagginJet 04-01-2004 02:11 PM

How many comps do you guys have running under that name?

Somewhere between 30-40 I believe :) Good for almost 3000 points each day. I have Maxvla to thank for the huge power increase though. We need more still... trying to win a race.

ShagginJet 04-01-2004 10:56 PM

^ so what name should I switch to then?

94_AcCoRd_EX 04-02-2004 01:04 AM

If you don't mind, we fold under:

username: OSUmaxx
team: 32

Thanks man!

Maxvla 04-02-2004 01:40 AM

we currently have 59 cpus. our competition has 130.

Maxvla 04-02-2004 01:42 AM

hey trev you tried asking feanor?

ShagginJet 04-02-2004 03:11 AM

I switched my home, will do the work two tomorrow.

Yeah, but he asked about computers. Many of those CPUs are virtual due to hyperthreading and running multiple instances on duallies, etc.

YGPM over @ OC..

94_AcCoRd_EX 04-02-2004 12:04 PM

Thanks ShagginJet!

94_AcCoRd_EX 04-14-2004 02:43 PM

Bump! We need some more power here :)

Besides, what else is your computer doing when you're not using it? Why not help out?

ShagginJet 04-19-2004 10:39 AM

BUMP!!

FOLD YOU FAGS!!

Ahaha, if that isn't inspiration for the people who don't fold, I don't know what is :D

Seriously though, I can't believe more people won't do this.

ShagginJet 04-19-2004 02:08 PM

It makes no sense, your computer is doing nothing 99% of the time, might as well just fold and use that cpu time for something worth wild.

Maxvla 04-20-2004 10:58 PM

agreed :)

ShagginJet 05-12-2004 11:47 AM

I just got a new system at work, p4 2.8 HT. First thing i did was started the client up. So i'm out a p2 350 for folding but now i have the new sys going, woot!!

For those who don't know what folding is, ASK!! We could always use more systems, it doesn't affect your system at all and it's for a great cause.

I'm going to see if some guys at work will let me set it up on their old p3 1g systems.

94_AcCoRd_EX 05-12-2004 01:55 PM

NICE!!! Are you running the hyperthreading package above? You need 2 clients to get the most out of a HT rig.

ShagginJet 05-19-2004 06:49 PM

^ Uhhh?? Explain pls.

Read the first post. See how there are different files to download based on what computer you have?

The hyperthreading CPUs won't utilize 100% unless you run multiple FAH clients at once. The service install in the first post will do that.

ShagginJet 05-20-2004 10:51 AM

So i ran the HT install, it's running, 50% on two clients. How do i know it's folding for the right group and name? Can i erase the files i've unzipped?

94_AcCoRd_EX 05-20-2004 01:58 PM

Look under program files/FAH or something like that and check out the .cfg file (or the FAHlog. It will say username and team #.

Perfect, running 50% each on two clients = 100%. You can erase the files you unzipped also.

Maxvla 05-29-2004 01:04 AM

great work shaggin.

stats went from 1800 points per day 2 days ago to 3800 points today :bandit:

keep up the good work.

CD5Passion 05-30-2004 12:43 AM

well damn I'm running a Macintosh:o

Maxvla 06-02-2004 11:42 AM

osx?

CD5Passion 06-02-2004 01:15 PM

^yupper version 10.3.3

94_AcCoRd_EX 06-02-2004 02:20 PM

^^^ You can fold too then.

I'll see if there's a service install for you. Otherwise you can go to folding.stanford.edu and download the client.

When its run the first time, enter OSUmaxx as the username and 32 for the team #.

CD5Passion 06-02-2004 02:41 PM

 up an runnin guyz

94_AcCoRd_EX 06-02-2004 02:47 PM

Very nice!

If you have any questions about configuration, etc. just ask :)

Thanks for the help.

CD5Passion 06-02-2004 03:07 PM

no problem now what the hell do you mean by configuration lol

94_AcCoRd_EX 06-02-2004 03:48 PM

^^^ Depending on what version you're running, you can configure different things. If you just got the graphical version, you should be good as long as you entered the username and team #

CD5Passion 06-02-2004 05:17 PM

^ yeah I got the graphical version and i put 32 and what not

94_AcCoRd_EX 06-02-2004 05:24 PM

You should be set then
