Clear Headlights on the 6th Gen Accord
 

Has anyone successfully cleared out that orange stripe on the bottom of the 6th Gen headlights? I wanna do it, but I'm concerned about a few things. Once you heat the headlight and the glue comes undone...you take out the orange stripe...what about the glue on the rest of the headlight? Isn't the glue messed up now? When you take out the stripe, is it clear...or since it wasn't meant to be removed, will it not be clear? Anyone with experience on this?

don't try to do this... it will look like crap...

Did you mean taking out the stripe and painting over it, or just painting?

just paiting over it.. Its a very common thing to do among 6th gen civics..

You'll have to open up the headlight assembly though..

Accord Man...what would it look like if I just painted over the orange stripe? To me, it doesn't sound like that would look too great. Have you seen this done on accords?

Smitty, were the accords in the pictures cleared, or did you change the headlights? Also, are they using fishing wire to take off the emblem? Does that work on the "Accord" emblem too...or is that clipped on?

Do you guys think the end product looks just as good cleared vs new headlights?

The cars pictured had had their lights cleared previously using the method described in the FAQ I posted. Those pictures were taken when they re-opened their headlights in order to paint the housings black.

The emblem removal was done professionally.

It's best to stick with your original headlights whenever possible. Nothing beats OEM quality, and the OEM beam pattern is far superior to any aftermarket unit's.

Yes I did see it done.. It'll look great if you'Re doing the black housing transformation.. otherwise, if you just have a black strip it'll kinda look out of place.

nope.. if you are taking out the stripe, then all is well..

Okay...so it'll be clear. Is this really as simple as it sounds? What could the potential complications be? I'm concerned about having all the glue come undone and I'll have headlight pieces left! :D

I didnt read the how-to, but I'm 99.9% sure that the silicone is for sealing up the assembly!!!

Just be gentle, and try not to scratch anything..

there's another post in the accord forum about the orange part too... the NJ guy.

i always thought that having that part non-orange was illegal.... like if you take out the orange area, doesnt that make your turn turn signals non-orange?

I believe as long as you use proper orange bulbs it will be legal. Shouldn't matter whether your car looks like it has green or purple or pink, as long as the light coming out is orange. :)

My front lights are already clear...I was told that clear or orange bulbs were allowed. Clear because some cars have the bulbs show thru an orange plastic...

Btw Accord Man, I was downtown tonite...cops pullin over modified cars like you wouldn't believe! They were targeting them, I asked the guys what they were gettin tickets for...one guy cuz his radio was too loud...another for an illegal lane change (no indicator) and a third for illegal taillights (an integra with altezzas). I couldn't believe it...and this was on Ste Catherines, so it's not like they were driving fast...there was too much traffic to do that!

Arite boys...so I cleared em yesterday...

Took longer than I expected, but it was worth it to have that annoying strip gone. However, it was not without incident, while separating the headlight housing, some silicone got on the chrome finish...let's just say that isn't the best quality stuff cuz as I wiped the silicone off, some of the finish rubbed off too!

Oh well, not too bad, (but it bugs me cuz I'm a perfectionist, hence all the questions before hand! ;) )

Anyway, for anyone who's planning on clearing their headlights, a lil advice.

First, having an extra pair of hands is a great help.
(I did it myself and it took me 7 hours, start to finish)

Second, be extra careful with the silicone, don't let it get on the light or the chrome. (Easier said than done)

I've yet to do it, althought I've been wanting to for a while now.

The guides I've been looking @ are
this and anothers but I'm not quite sure how to get off the clips under the front bumper, I've yet to find a tutorial which shows and explains everything easily.

If anyone has another guide plz post, the one from the toronto accord club is no longer availible. :o

The black clips are the same clips you'll find when you open your hood (on a coupe, there are 5 on top, 4 on the bottom)

To remove them you simply insert a flat head screw driver and slowly pull it back. What this does is remove the inside part of the clip from its outer casing, this should allow you to pull the entire clip out. You may find that a couple get stuck (especially on the bottom) Get the other ones out and come back to them later. Be patient, try pulling at a slightly different angle to get the clip out...try not to break it as that will only complicate things.

I would suggest, to understand the mechanism of the clips better, take off one or two from under the hood, you'll see what I mean.
