Mix black paint and clear paint together in a aerosol spray bottle (the kind you get at the real paint store) not sure if it's a 20/80 mix but test it before you try it on your lights. Spray it on the outside of the lens with either one or two coats. This is how it was done "back in the day" but be forewarned, you WILL get a ticket for it. I used to spray the inside of my taillights, a high gloss black over the back silver reflector part and it gave the lights a darker look but not enough to be that obvious.

what i did was i got two cans of clear coat and one can of tinting paint. I then washed the lights and put two coats of tint and 3 coats of clear...they came out good but had to take off when i got my car inspected

in vermont they are illegal to do any darkening of the taillight...i almost didn't get inspected and the guy that did it was nice enough to take it off to allow me ot pass inspection.
