Back in the Honda game

Well yeah sort of....

I should be getting a 1991 Civic Hatch this weekend. Needs some engine lovin' but that shouldn't be too bad. Getting the stock, blown engine and the replacement already installed. Its got a big bad 4spd tranny in there.

Its going to be my daily driver so I doubt I do anything major to it. I may swap that 4psd out for a DX or Si 5spd. But hey, who knows....

Pics to follow this weekend.

pdiggitydogg 04-13-2006 01:53 PM

I love those

Addict 04-13-2006 01:55 PM

Should be fun to mess with. I really don't want to mess with the 6, so this will have to work!

Forgot to mention that the guy put a new clutch in along with a bunch of other new parts. He couldn't get it running right, so I'm picking it up for a pretty decent price.

pdiggitydogg 04-13-2006 02:06 PM

I was looking at buying one over the winter, for under $1000
Hurry and get some pics of this thing. Oh, and welcome back to your senses :D

This one is well under $1000. ;)

Oh don't get me wrong. I enjoy having torque. But I will enjoy 30 MPG even more.

Addict 04-13-2006 02:43 PM

2 Attachment(s)
This is what they go for around here. Finding one at about $1000 isn't real common.

AzCivic 04-13-2006 03:02 PM

I'd throw in a d16z6 engine/tranny, you'll get some decent getup and go, great mileage and CHEAP.

AkimboStylee 04-13-2006 03:53 PM

yeah I had a hatch, it was nice, but i just got tired of not having a/c so i sold the car and motor(d16y7 with a y8 head i think, can't really remember, turbo and all goodies) and am in the process of either buying an eg hatch or coupe.

thermal 04-13-2006 05:29 PM

Danng. You guys are paying too much. Around here, I can get one for less than $400. Yeah, they run. The only thing is, sometimes, they are riced the fuk up.

Remember that these are cable tranny guys.

pdiggitydogg 04-13-2006 05:57 PM

Arnel, you come from a magical land where EVERYTHING is great.
Things are super cheap, parts are always easy to come by, cars are always faster...hot younger women find you ;)

thermal 04-13-2006 06:21 PM

well, come down and chill with me sometime then Pat!

Maybe down the road. I'll work on blowing up the D15B first.... I don't have any immediate intentions of adding anything special. But I say that about all my cars....

This was under $400......:yup:

thermal 04-13-2006 08:00 PM

hell yeah!

KwikR6 04-14-2006 12:56 AM

I LOVE Ef's. I've always wanted to do one up.

Addict 04-16-2006 09:12 PM

Didn't get it today. The guy I'm getting it from had it over a friend's lot and couldn't get it out because it was blocked in by other cars. His friend was supposed to move the cars out of the way.

Ah well. Maybe tomorrow. Got a new ECU in for it. Now I'm hunting down a 90-91 Si gauge cluster. Need a tach in this thing....

AzCivic 04-17-2006 12:42 AM

man, I wish I had an extra car I could just fiddle with.

^joking right?

I have got a full running 89 si for sale(minus front drivers seat)

Addict 04-20-2006 12:59 PM

Here it is.... in all its glory.
http://gallery.digitaldeviation.com/v/justin/civic/

I haven't "taken" delivery yet. There's a few things that I need to think about.
The windshield needs replaced (min of $218 installed from what I've got quoted so far)
Front seats need replaced
That rear rust needs taken care of(I'm not a body person)

Good news is that the engine is the D15B2 (DX) which is a whoping 92hp vs the 70hp std D15B1. I do get the old D15B1 with it as well (hole in the block).

KwikR6 04-20-2006 07:25 PM

hahahh YEEEEAAAAHHHHH that's dope man.

Addict 04-20-2006 09:08 PM

Welp. She's in the garage. I got the engine back together and swapped in a new ECU (the CORRECT ECU for the engine). Bought a battery charger/starter. She fired up on the first crank. Its missing exhaust from the header back so it was LOOOOUUD. I had to shut it off since its kinda late.

Off to a good start.:)

Look at this beast!

KwikR6 04-21-2006 04:09 AM

That motor screams 18's at least. hahah sorry, but that is amazing.

Addict 04-22-2006 07:59 PM

Well I cleaned it out yesterday. Found about $.40 and part of a -dollar bill. :pfft:

Started it up some more. It's got a CEL right now, but seems to idle ok. It was almsot out of gas so I didn't try drving it. Went out today and got a gas can, some gas, Techron Cleaner and some SeaFoam. Tomorrow she's getting an enema....:moon:

I'm trying SOOOOO hard not to buy unneeded items. I bought a 90-91 CRX Si gauge cluster last night. Waiting for it to arrive. Found some nice bronze HX wheels locally. I'm trying to tell myself not to get them. But they have newer tires on them, they're light and they're 14". ....must....resist.....must...resist....

hahahaha just keep most of it a secret. hahaha oh wait..that'll be hard. All of a sudden the car is in a show winning trophies. Wifey would be like..."Wtf?"

Wifey -----> :smileysex <----Addict.

Addict 04-24-2006 10:02 PM

And the plot thickens....
So I got to take her for a short spin. It moves, but hesitates as the RPMs climb. Its got 2 CELs right now that I've got to work out.

And here's the good news.....

I'll be picking up a B18B for F R E E ! It has a bent rod so it'll take some rebuilding. But since I'm not in any hurry I figure why should I pass on this?

KwikR6 04-24-2006 11:44 PM

Just tell your wife the motor went in it and slap the b18b in it.

mylittlecivic 04-25-2006 01:03 AM

sounds like fun! if i get another car it will be a golf. but the blasted civic is so good to me.

Addict 04-25-2006 09:08 PM

Well I figured out at least one of my CEL codes. I have the automatic version of the ECU. Well when you plug an automatic tranny ECU in, its expecting to see the lockup sensor. *smacks forehead* Son of a..... So I ordered another off eBay. Hopefully tomorrow I'll get to look into the other code (code 8; TDC Sensor).

The B18B will be delivered this weekend. :) The rebuild of the B18 may be slow until winter, but at least I'll have it.

KwikR6 04-26-2006 08:42 PM

Yeah that's the thing hey. You have it now. You can take your time with it now.

IALuder 04-27-2006 12:34 PM

exactly what im doing with my Lude.

good luck with this beast.
i got two friends up here running a B18B Boosted ef and a B18c1 NA EF. both are nice.

Addict 05-01-2006 12:54 PM

So I got the hesitation issue resolved. Fubar'd distributor. The distributor had so much play in the shaft its a wonder it started. So I rebuilt one I had laying around with some of the parts from the dead one. And viola! No hesitation.

Pu my CRX Si Gauge Cluster in. Woohoo! I have a tach! Now I just gotta figure out why the temp gauge isn't working. Though I think it was dead before.

Still haven't got the damn ECU I ordered 6 days ago from eBay. Considering the ECU is coming from Kent, OH (same f-in state) this guy is a slow ass or trying to rip me off. Bastards.

Next up.... Wheels/Tires & Exhaust.

This is the reply this moron sent me last night:

i have to sort them still tonight (its been a long night), but everythign will be packed and shipped by tomorrow
Long night? Its been a long ass 6 days for me.... dick

Talking stock wheels & tires. ;) Looking for a reasonable set of HX or VX wheels. And stock exhaust for now. Once I get the B18 ready to drop in, I'll change out the exhaust.

KwikR6 05-01-2006 01:34 PM

that's bs. i would say that it's been a long 6 days for you.

Some GSR fat 5's would look hot on an EF

Addict 05-13-2006 09:27 PM

Got her running with that new ecu. Purring like a tiger (lack of exhaust).

Looky what I picked up today.....

Bronze HX Wheels with rubber.

sicones 05-13-2006 09:37 PM

nice, I like those wheels I wish they were bigger tho like 15", those are some beefy ass tires

nonovurbizniz 05-13-2006 11:49 PM

If I ever decided to pick up another honda it'd be that gen 4 door and put a h22 in it.

I always like the 4 doors from that year for some reason...

Nice pick up though and with just the couple things you bought you should be pretty satisfied for a LITTLE bit at least...

It's hard giving up dumping money into cars even when you say that it's "just my daily driver"... I almost went nuts and started buying stuff for the subaru but managed to control myself.

KwikR6 05-14-2006 12:07 AM

Oh Snap Addict. Those are super nice.

Pics of them on the car.

or ban.

Eh. They're nice & light. The rims themselves only weigh 11.9lbs. That was my reasoning behind getting them. That & I needed new tires anyhow.

Yeah its real tough to not do much to it. I keep catchin myself searchin H-T classifieds and ebay.

I have a B18 lined up already (for free). So yeah, its likely to get a change.

lol.... I didn't have time to get them on the car yesterday. I will this week though.

KwikR6 05-14-2006 11:19 AM

Sweet deal mang.

Addict 05-21-2006 07:36 PM

So I started on the rust repair on the driver's side yesterday. Basically just trying to stop the rust that's there now. So cutting and sanding. Still have a ways to go.
What it looked before the dremel got a hold of it:

After the dremel ate it:

And I finally got the HX wheels on. I had to use a lot of PB Blaster on one of the wheels (and a hammer). :censored: I did take pics but I forgot my camera (not home now). So I'll post those up tomorrow.

KwikR6 05-21-2006 08:26 PM

Rust repair. ICK!

Addict 05-23-2006 07:50 AM

Got the wheels on the car:
Old vs. New (that was the GOOD 13" wheel....lol)

Yeah it needs lowered. 4x4 action happenin' there.....

KwikR6 05-23-2006 01:51 PM

Dude those bronze hx wheels are the tits. I like it.

Addict 06-04-2006 09:47 PM

Long Post

More on the body work.....

So I decided to go the Bondo route for rust repair. Mostly because at this point I don't have a welder and I've never done fiberglass work before. The again I've never used Bondo either. :D

Here's what it started as:

After chopping the rust out:

I started prepping the rear driver's side section by sanding it down to bare metal with 60 grit (after I cut away the rust) sand paper. Let me say a couple things here:
1)3M SandBlaster sandpaper has to be the BEST sandpaper I've ever used. It lasts and doesn't clog. Worth the money.
2)Invest in a nice sanding block. I spent a lil extra change on a 3M block and its made this much easier. Nice & heavy, holds the paper very well and flexes (made of rubber).

Then I taped off the area with some 3M Scotch(you'll see this brand alot from me ;)) automotive painting tape (green stuff). Yes its different than the Scotch Blue Painter's tape. Its heavier and allows you to sand up to the tape without it ripping up. I also used a cheap drop cloth to cover the areas I didn't want to get paint/bondo on. The inside area got a thorough coating of rust convertor to help prevent the rust from coming back. Its like a primer so you have to sand it back off the outside area.

Sanded:

Mixing Bondo is a little hard to comprehend from the label. The instructions are one long run on sentence. Basically, use a about a 3" spot of filler that's 1/2" thick with a 1.25" strip of hardener. Mix thoroughly and work FAST as hell. This stuff sets up real quick. Only mix what you can work with in 3 minutes or less. Apply with a spatula/spreader. My thinking was its better to have a good buildup that I could sand down rather than a low area that I'd have to re-apply. Let sit for 30 minutes.

Fresh Bondo:

So after it set up I was back at it with the 60 grit. Its important to remember that you need to let the sandpaper do the work. In other words, don't press hard on the block. You want to work slowly to shape the Bondo correctly. Follow this with 120 grit and then 320 grit prior to primer. Pull the tape and remask off the area (clean paint lines).

The primer needs to be filler primer or etch primer. Chances are real good you'll have some pinholes. No worries though. The primer should fill anything up to 1/16" deep. Wipe the area down with some tack cloth (a MUST) to remove any dust. Apply the primer according to what the can says. Light coats work best.

Primed:

So that's where it is right now. I still have to take some 600 grit to the primer to finish it up. But that's tomorrow's project. :)

GT40FIED 06-04-2006 10:05 PM

Bondo can be fun. Especially is you mix the entire containers of the puddy with the curing agent. Stand back and watch the fire!:D

KwikR6 06-05-2006 01:39 PM

hahahahaha

Addict. I love this build up thread

IALuder 06-05-2006 09:37 PM

awesome. get some smaller tires..
